Self-abuse. Why do you do this to yourself? You're just torturing yourself. Summer is also short and should be enjoyed......

We got snow

I was alot more interested in fishing for walleyes this weekend but we got 10 - 20" of wet snow up on our mountains in Montana. The Beartooth Highway opened this weekend which is sort of like Tuckermans but bigger and you can drive to the top. Terrible camping weather but the Snow Creek Saloon is open!
We can ski year round here at Big Sky ( unless you ask ski area mgmt ). Sometimes, skiing means 10 turns linked together but I think that counts in August. I skied at least once a month for over 7 years in a row but my friends had 11 years under their belts. The droughts of the last couple years brought my streak to an end.
My good friend Dave Deutl once skied every month at Sugarbush... I'm guessing that it was around '85. It snowed about 5" on the last day of August, so Dave and a friend went skiing. Then they went around the Valley and collected ice cubes from all the restaurants and made a "trail" about 40' long and skied on Sept. 1st. Someone from the Christian Science Monitor did a story on them and they were famous in local lore.

Ski hard or wait in the car

Looks like the 'bird will have powder day to finish off their season this weekend.

Snowbird posted a nice picture of a packed Tram on their site yesterday. I can't wait to try the new chair-lift and carpet-lift that they are installing in a 575' tunnel which will let out into Mineral Basin. Unfortunately, it will likely make the basin more crowded since a significant number of less able skiers were intimidated by the need to step off from the ridgeline as the current access requires.

They just become minor obstacles.

tirolerpeter, how's you move to Utah going?

House has been on the market for a little over two weeks. We have had a few potential buyers take the tour. I feel like I'm living in a "model house" the way my wife has it staged. I get yelled at if I leave anything out of place. And, I am getting bored, because I am not allowed to "play" with my tools. I can't build stuff, and I can't work on my cars or truck ("What if a potential buyer wanted to see the place?"). I actually look forward to working out since it is something to do. I hope I don't wear out the lawn mower racing around our half acre before we sell. I have also been going on extended bike rides just to get away from all this "perfection." If a real buyer with $$$$ showed up, we could be out of here in a week. THINK SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got a good look at the southern rockies as we flew into Las Vegas, and I think we flew over Telluride or Purgatory. The snow is 90% above treeline at this point.

Mt Charelston (Las Vegas Ski Resort) has a few patches of snow left on it which is visible from the city.

It is hot today and it was 108F when we visited Hoover Dam around noon.

I am off to Mammoth on monday afternoon.

I have flown over the Rockies many times, and you can see huge snow fields on north faces and in sheltered valleys right into August. Scenes like that keep my nose to the window wishing I were down there!

Loafer, were you able to do the "Hard Hat Tour" at Hoover Dam? I had heard that they weren't doing that anymore due to security concerns. I did it in 2000 on a two week cross country drive from San Diego back to LI.

I am not a gambler, but Las Vegas is worth a couple of days just to "people watch." It is one of those places where you can see bejeweled "high rollers" rubbing elbows with some poor slob buying chips with rolled up pennies! Not to mention, that "night" is only referenced by clocks, not a reduction in the number of people out on the town.

The hard hat tour is no longer being given since 9/11. Security is very tight now with security roadblocks on route 93 which is the roadway over the dam. We where able to drive over the dam after being waved through security.

We did get to see the Nevada generator wing which just opened back up for the first time since 2001 and we got a nice view of the turbines.

We drove into Arizona to a beach on the Colorado River, but the water was too cold for me at 52F.
