Got in my first in a series of long weekends.
When we drive to Mt. Snow, we always go by Potter's Tavern just on the outskirts of Troy and every week, as we pass by on Fridays and Sundays, the "Weds/Thurs 9.99 Prime Rib Special" sign tantalizes us. Being Thurs night, we rushed to make it before the kitchen stopped serving (9 pm), after i had called the day before to see if the timing might work. We made it by 8:30, and the staff was super-friendly. They remembered me from my phone call, and had a nice fire going in the fireplace. We both ordered the prime rib and it was very good. Not award winning, but for $9.99, a good deal. Cooked well and came with good sides (homemade mashed potatoes and carrots). The beer selection wasn't comprehensive, but they had a couple passable selections (Long Trail Pale Ale and Otter Creek Copper Ale) on draft. We wanted to get to the condo, so we skipped apps and desert (though the desert list sounded great), but I would be remiss if I didn't highlight the best part of the meal, which was the bread and butter they served! The bread came out warm and fresh, and the butter was a seasoned garlic butter that I literally could have put on everything. Might be worth another trip on its own. In any event, a solid B+ of a dinner.
Oh what's that you say? This is a ski forum? Right. The mountain skied great all weekend. Other reports of scratchiness and thin cover I think must be taken in relative terms. Everything we skied was very edgeable, and the thin cover spots on the natural snow trails amounted to a little bit of grass sticking through, nothing major at all. The snow was amazingly consistent and you really didn't have to think about ice patches, which for Vermont in January is pretty darn good. Same goes for the seasonal temps. By the end of the weekend the seeded bumps on Exhibition were starting to ski very nicely. Yardsale and Pat's Pitch were the funky but fun selves, as was Ledge. The groomed runs on the North Face skied well (esp. Plummet) though the bumps we skied over there were a little lacking in terms of lines. We did not cover all trails though. We skied Thanks Walt once each day and it is in great shape, and of course all the premium trails were skiing awesome. Today we even decided to take some Carinthia laps, only to get stuck on the quad for 15+ minutes and then inched to the top by the AUX motor. We did get some hot drink vouchers out of it though; nice job by the mountain there.
Lastly, I will refrain from bad mouthing the 1846 Restaurant passed saying that we were EXTREMELY displeased with our experience there on Friday night. We tried Last Chair and the Saloon first, but the waits were too long, but we won't make the same mistake of substituting 1846 again. The whole experience just reinforced our overiding opinion that eating in is > eating out during ski weekends.
