Resort: Mount Snow
Date Skied 01/06/07 - 11:30 to 2:30pm
Conditions: Cloudy, spring like 60 degrees, no rain!!!!!!
Trip Report: I decided to go skiing on Saturday instead of going up to Pico on Sunday. The weather forecast called for the rain to stop late morning / early afternoon. I checked the Mount Snow trail report and they reported summit lifts delayed opening until ski patrol can check the conditions (or something like that). This was around 9am. I figured worse case scenario the Summit Express lifts will not run but the Canyon quad and possibly a North Face lift would be open by the time I arrive.
I parked at Sundance with about 100 other cars and I saw the Tumbleweed lift was operating. I booted up and wore my NF rain jacket and headed over to the lift. To my surprise there was a huge lift line, but why??? Was it that everybody decided to ski Sundance today?? As I got on the lift and talked to another rider, I was informed that this was the only mountain lift open. As the lift ascended I looked to my right and could see both summit lifts were not turning. I could not see anything on the main mountain turning.
Getting off of the lift was an adventure as I was told it was going to be. It seemed like a majority of boarders and skiers just stopped and blocked people from exiting the lift properly. There should have been a lift attendant up there telling people to move. The snow was heavy, with bare spots, as expected. There was only one way down from here. I think it may have consisted of three or four trails. I got to the connector where you could ski over to the main mountain and in the distance I did see a lift turn, so like the other people I skied towards it. As I got closer I realized it was not the Canyon Quad, but the double or triple lift over in the learning area. It was a fun trek back to the Sundance lift.
I now know why there was so many people skiing over at Sundance, this is the only lift and trail opened. I made the best of it, on the crowded trail. There was a nice jump on this trail, and that was about it.
Over in the old Mixing Bowl area they had some type of rail jam event going. I called it quits around 2:30 as it started to rain. I walked over to the deli in the Grand Summit and had an awesome and reasonably priced lunch. They were serving a beef brisket dinner, garlic mashed potatoes and green beans (not the cheap canned ones) for $7.95. I could not believe it was that cheap and that good!
I was happy to get out today and enjoy the spring skiing. I did take some pictures of Mount Snow as I was leaving. They are kind of depressing though.
