Trip Report:
Yet another great day at Mt. Snow. It was more crowded than MLK, but still not as bad as one would expect on a vacation week there. Snowed from 10 till 1 and was quite heavy around noon. Sun came out at 2:30 or so and it was a beautiful afternoon. Snow guns were blasting away on Nitro and Titanium when I arrived and when I left they were going on Beartrap and Long John (there was more but I didn't get to see where).
I clicked in at Carinthia shortly after 10 and hopped right on the quad. Was happy to see on the way up that the ropes had been dropped on Claim Jumper, so I headed down there for first run. At that point, it was mainly a breakable crust with a few tracks in the couple inches of powder on top. Coverage was excellent. Hit the superpipe on the way down which was excellent, pretty nice being in a nice pipe like that after dealing with Wachusett's (although that one is decent this year).
Went back up the quad and headed down Milky Way which had decent PP with a few patches of ice poking through. Went up the Sunbrook quad from there and got ready to have a ball in the North Face.
First run was Olympic to the Trials. I was only on Olympic for the initial headwall which was scraped in the middle and had good loose piles on the side. At that point, the Trials had not-so-much of a breakable crust, but the traffic of the day would eventually break it. Besides some debris and a few big rocks, coverage is also excellent here. Just look out for the occasional stream or two, almost went straight into one after jumping off a 3 foot rock.
Next run was Challenger which wasn't too pretty. It was a scraped and unedgeable mess for the most part. Coverage is good, but that one needs a lot more fresh snow. The lower part was slightly better, but still not great.
Took a run down the now-open Jaws. It was groomed overnight before the snow started and was almost untouched when I hit it. Probably the sweetest run of the day as far as powder went. Nice trail with a few steep sections and very narrow.
Although it was listed as closed, I went to seek out Ledge and it turned out to be open. The conditions were alright, definitely on the sloppy side but decent. Nice trail, wasn't quite as great as it seems to be made out to be but it's pretty fun and narrow.
Jumped on the Canyon quad which had a 3 skier long singles line and took a run down One More Time. It was also groomed and had a lot of people on it so no fresh. It was in great shape though. Ducked into the Boonies a few times which were too flat to really do anything, but they are decent for a beginning glade skier. Again, watch out for the stream.
Took a ride on the Summit quad which had a deserted singles line (main line wasn't too bad either, no more than 5 minutes at that point and it continued to get smaller as the day went on). Had a rather long delay during the ride, but finally made it up for a run down Uncle's. Very fun trail with lots of twists and turns. Was groomed but had some great snow considering it's natural. Meadow was also nice with piles of loose snow and nice packed powder in between.
Took another ride to the summit (and got stuck again for a while), but then hoofed it all the way over to Big Dipper. Wide natural trail with a few decently steep sections and a great scenic run. Also gets way out into the woods that are on skier's right of Sunbrook. Great trail. Took a ride on the Beartrap Double to the sounds of Molly Hatchet. Witnessed first hand the devastation of the rainstorm on Beartrap (solid sheet of ice, but the guns were cranking). Headed down Claim Jumper (nicely packed in at that point) to the pipe and to lunch at Carinthia base.
After a burger, I headed back out for another run on Claim Jumper before heading through the Sunbrook to play in the Trials for 2 hours. One run I found this sweet spot with great snow, widely spaced trees, and some nice bumps but the area is so expansive I couldn't find it again. Also took a run beyond the boundry a little ways but it was a little too thick so I went back. It was still a little solid but very fun exploring in there. Also took a run down Jaws during that time which was scraped up top but was still very nice down the last half.
Finished the day with a cruise down Long John with the sun at my back. Was having a blast with no one else around and then I hit the damn uphill part. I was too stubborn to just go around to Deer Run I guess. Took 2 runs down Claim Jumper which was beginning to get a bit beat up and exposed some ice but the coverage is good in there still.
Well, that ends another day at Mt. Snow and it's beginning to feel like a home mountain as I'm starting to really get a feel for the place. I'll have a Wachusett report (hopefully a powder night) Friday night. Here's a rough schedule for the rest of my season:
February:
29th- 24 hours at Wachusett
March:
6th: Okemo
15th-16th: Stowe
20th-22nd: MRV
April:
6th- Projected Wachusett closing day
I also will get the typical night trips to Wachusett. I have a voucher for Mt. Snow for $20 off for March 1st-21st which I'd like to use but IDK if I'll have the time. I'll try though. I also want to get to Sundown once to check it out. As for late April, I plan on being at Mt. Snow's closing day and, if they're open, one day during April vacation.
