Sunday Dec. 23 2012 :snow::snow::snow: So First day out for the season way a very nice snowy day. I could not fall a sleep the night before so I only skied half a day from 12 pm to 4pm on Sunday. Not many people were their for a weekend , If I had sleep more I would have been their at opening but since I drove 3.5 hours to get their and to come home I was very happy for my first day out, they were making lots of snow, nice conditions all day.

Glad you enjoyed your first day out. Next time maybe get way more drunk and eat a handful of benadryl the night before to make sure you fall asleep? :D

They recovered well from the rain on Friday. It did get a bit busy on Christmas Eve. There were a lot of once a year skiers out this weekend.

Sorry to hijack this thread---but I am planning ongoing to mount snow tomorrow for the first time---I need to know how well the mountain does in wind. 20 mph wind tomorrow --no or go?

It black diamonds on the North Face are nice but nothing as steeps as Killington, it mostly intermediate trails on main face. For south Vermont resort it is my favorite enjoy.

Wind could effed some detachable chairs, but they have a new 6 person bubble chair that will keep you warm in the wind, there known for windy Times.

I was there last week, and although the bubble chair shields you, I thought it actually catches the wind ALOT. It was on hold the day before I went, but running the day I was there - bouncing and floating around like a plane in turbulence. That said, 20mph doesn't sound like it would be enough that they'd put it on hold.

As someone who skis Mount Snow about 40 days a year, and has about 700 lifetime days at Mount Snow over about 30 ski seasons, I can honestly say that while big winds out of either the NW or South do effect lift operations, the Bluebird and at 1400+ lbs bubble chairs, with the bubble down DO run in winds far greater than any lift that Mount Snow has ever had. Just like with ANY lift in the world though, if you get enough wind hitting typically the top terminal at the wrong angle, you can't predictally operate that lift safely, and wind holds happen

20mph = 100% go - wind holds aren't any issue until your talking 30-35mph sustained winds with higher gust from the WRONG angle! My wife and kids just arrived at our place up there a few min ago - found 17" on our deck, and as of right now based on years on experience, my wife doesn't expect any wind hold issues for 1st chair tomorrow unless things DRAMATICALLY change over night to the bad!

If the bubbles are down, their 1400+ lbs "fly" pretty straight and true in most winds if the chair is loaded in a balanced way. If the bubble is left up (just look at the sign right after you load on the right and if they ask you to put the bubble down, DO SO!) and the breeze is up, you can get a BIG sail effect, especially in the last 1/3rd of the rise just after you crest the ridge past the top of the Ego Alley triple! When the wind is blowing hard out of the NW, that's where you get a major wind tunnel effect until you enter the top terminal and get shielded by the summit lodge.

BTW, if you've never ridden the Bluebird before, its an AMAZING lift! and as you're entering the summit terminal, all you have to do is just take your skis/board off the safety bar and the bar and the bubble will raise hydraulically in their own just before the chair gets to the bullwheel and you unload!

It was definitely bouncing around last week, but I was the only one on it, so maybe that made it worse. Plus I'm known to get anxious on lifts, so maybe it's just me!

The Bluebird plows ahead when they didn't have any summit access at all previously due to wind. That said, if the wind comes in from the wrong direction, any lift is going to be shutdown.

At least they have the option of Canyon Quad to North Face to get to the top in desperate times.

Well let's hope you don't come face to face with a moving carpet lift like Sugar loaf. I fell from it last year ... haha

They have a moving carpet at Mounsnow and at Alta, I don't really like that.
