VERNON, New Jersey -- In an effort to raise community awareness and help support the battle against breast cancer, Mountain Creek will host The Tubbs Snowshoe Romp to Stomp Out Breast Cancer race Saturday, January 27 2007. The benefit puts a new twist on charity runs and walks: introducing a 3k or 5k scenic showshoe hike on snow covered trails. 100% of the donations will go to the Komen foundation and the Northern NJ affiliate to benefit cancer research, education and screening.
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, the Foundation is an international organization with a network of volunteers working through local Affiliates and Komen Race for the Cure(R) events to eradicate breast cancer as a life threatening disease. The Northern New Jersey Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was founded to carry out the mission of the national organization on a local level.
According to the National Cancer Society, women have a 1 in 9 chance of developing breast cancer in their lifetime. New Jersey has the 10th highest incidence and the 5th highest breast cancer mortality in the U.S. Over 6,700 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and over 1,400 die of the disease each year in the state.
For event details and to register online visit www.tubbsromptostomp.com or, sign up the day of the event at Mountain Creek, starting at 8am. The showshoe race will begin at 9am and Tubbs Snowshoes will provide limited quantities of free demo snowshoes for use on a first-come-first-served basis. Individuals may bring their own, or get there early to take advantage of the free showshoes.
Participants who register before October 31 will be eligible to win a week-long walking adventure vacation from Country Walkers. Also, individuals who purchase a pair of Tubbs Odyssey, Wilderness or Ridgeline Series snowshoes at their local Eastern Mountain Sports and register for the Romp To Stomp event by November 12 will receive a free pair of Tubbs 2-Part Showshoe Poles.
