Mt. Equinox, VT

Date Hiked: 11/04/06

Trails(s) Hiked: Blue Summit Trail

Total Distance: Not positive on the mileage, but probably 6ish, just short of 2,800 vertical.

Difficulty: Moderate

Conditions: Partly sunny at the base, 4-6" of snow and very limited visibility at summit

Special Required Equipment: None

I expected this hike to be somewhat long and challenging from various reports I had read. I also expected the weather to be partly sunny by the time I made it to the top with decent visibility. Pause. Not!

While there was no snow at the base, at about 2,000' there was enough to cover everything and by about maybe 3,000-3,500', there was a good 4" (and probably half a foot at the summit where it hadn't been windblown). Visibility on the summit was very poor - maybe two hundred feet at the most.

Nonetheless, not too bad of a hike, though I will want to do it again when there's some visibility. Though it is nearly 3,000 in vertical, it hikes (Blue Summit Trail) like Stratton.

Equinox....

..Nice threecy..I know what that mountain is like(in general;-))...grew up just over the border in NY....spent time in the areas north, south, and east of Manchester often.
Imagine if the trees were thinned a bit...along with some hazard/rock removal.....what a great descent!!!..talk about constant steep pitch!!!....what a mountain it would be to ski...
