Trails(s) Hiked: Winslow Trail
Total Distance: 3.0 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Conditions: Dry, Starting Temp Bottom (1,800 ft): 65 F, Summit Temp and Winds (2,937 ft): 60 F and 20 mph wind, Finish Temp Bottom: 72 F
Special Required Equipment: Bug Spray
Trip Report: Really fun early morning hike!
Left Concord, NH at the junction of 89 and 93 and set off to exit 11 on 89. About 33 miles or 24 minutes to the exit. Then down route 11 to Kearsarge valley road and up to winslow park, about 8 miles or 15 minutes. 3 dollar charge per person at the gate. We were there at about 7:45 and there was no one at the gate, YES, my friend and I just escaped a 6 dollar charge! So we geared up (I was trying a new back pack, EMS summit TL, worked great, even came with a camel back type thing, good day pack that you can attatch skis too) and set off.
The trail rises straight up for 1.1 miles and climbs 1100 feet. A fairly moderate climb with mostly granite ledges and roots to climb over. Fairly dry and no problem ascending. Took about 33 minutes to summit. GOod trail with some nice views on the way up.
Reach 2,936 feet (summit) to find that no one else was up there. Awesome, we took so pictures and ate lunch around 9 o'clock (oh well we were hungry). We bouldered around on the summit ledges and looked at the fire tower. Around 9:50 some other people showed up from the auto road and we headed down around 10:00 because we liked the peace and quiet. Saw deer, porcupine, snakes, frogs, chip munks, and a hawk. Took about 22 minutes to descend.
Overall a great morning hike, as I had afternoon commitments. A nice fairly challenging short hike that is within close proximity to southern new hampshire. I would recommend to anyone who likes a good view!
