Time Skied: 9am to 4:15pm
Weather: Upper teens and lower 20s, cold and windy, mostly sunny
Conditions: hard pack, ice, man made snow
Since New Year's Day was a CT Ski Awareness day, I headed up to Mt. Snow for discount lift tickets (only $48 each). The cold temperatures set in this past week for the northeast, after last week's rain disaster. It was cold enough the whole day to blow snow, and they were blowing a lot of it with their fan guns (especially on South Bowl, Roller Coaster, etc.). It was also windy, so the bluebird's bubble was a necessity. I was surprised that there were not as many people there as I had expected. The wait for the Bluebird was 5-15 minutes max. No line for the Grand Summit Express, but you paid the price when you rode it (you were freezing by the time you reached the top). They only had 49 trails open, so not as much terrain open as I had hoped. However, it looked like the majority of trails on the mountain (open or closed) has a nice base to them to build off of (we just need some snow). There was some decent man made snow on the trails in spots, however there were numerous spots of ice on the trails. The wind was strong enough in the morning that it was just blowing the snow off the trails, revealing a layer of ice underneath. This was a problem on some trails such as lodge and canyon. So you had to be very careful to maneuver around the icy patches. The wind luckily died down a little bit in the afternoon. In Sunbrook, Thanks Walt was one of the better trails of the day with some nice coverage. The runs of the day overall were Ridge and Snowdance. They'll still be able to make some snow for the next few days, but snowmaking can't cover up all the ice. We need snow.
