OK... So AZ Jazz combo...

I'll play the drum kit... :) Do we have an upright bass player?

Well... I can kinda play upright bass too. But then I'm not much good on piano or brass. I can play piano and trumpet/bone at the same time. But I think I'll need both hands for bass.

Yeah, I hear ya' on "getting practice time in" ...amidst attempting to make a living...not the easiest to do, but given the current hiring situation, not above all else..
Canadian Brass = a great sound/tone-color eh'!??
Keeping the embouchure responsive/in_shape would now take such a daily regimen...at least with me.
Jack Sheldon has?/had a nice sound...soft or colorful brilliance..the late Bill Chase... MPBN has a classical show mornings...plays many great pieces featuring trumpet. Have listened to Maurice Andre a lot but there are so many classical names that fly right over one's head if you don't follow...

For all you music lovers....I thought I would share this video with you.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9p0Acf-SbU

A friend just sent it to me. One of the coolest things I have seen in a while. I shared it with one of my inept co-workers to inspire him. It may have done more harm then good.

The Japanese are truly wizzes at miniaturizing adn mass-producing technically advanced products.

Agreed. I brought 18 of my brightest musicians there about 5 years ago and it was a life - altering trip. We heard one of their average high school groups in a rehearsal. Brought tears to my eyes. So musical and polished.

Jay Webb on the trumpet. The mute he is using is custom designed and patented by my brother. (shameless plug)

I like this thread... :)

Today - I'm setting up a small kit to record a drum solo demo for camp MMW this summer...

Great video. Looks like a bigger version of a cup mute. Nice full, round sound. (it doesn't hurt that Georgia is one of my favorite ballads) Thanks for the post.

That MMW camp looks amazing. Good luck with that.

thanks

I recorded 4 drums solos last night for the audition submission.... I'm not really a solo kinda guy.. Never play them live unless there's multiple percussionists involved...
But i did it... Selected one... kinda ripped off Bonham on a lot of it... :)

Also submitted a jazz(ish) song that I did with a keyboard player as a duo...

So - I just need to see if i get accepted...

I'm so stoked!!!

Thought I would share with you guys.

This weekend was the Berklee High School Jazz Festival in Boston. It's the largest high school jazz fest in the country.

On top of the bands competing, they bring in All Star Groups to perform with some top-notch instrumentalists. This year, they had Eric Miyashiro and Delfayo Marsalis who performed with the Crescent City Super Band.

Here are some links:

The Crescent Band playing a killer arrangement of "I Wish"

Some Eric Miyahsiro: (I don't like Maynard stuff and this band sucks but Eric kills)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-H4VdATTeI

Our band placed 3rd in their division, which is a HUGE accomplishment. Unfortunately, 2 of my students came down with some stomach bug and puked all day. We had to leave before awards. If we had stayed, we would have had our picture taken with Eric and Delfayo.

For all you trumpet guys, the band that was on right before us was from NJ (Willingboro) and was playing some killer latin chart. The lead trumpet player was sitting on a double high A forever. It was one of the most unreal high school things I have ever heard.

Wow! Nice! Congrats! :D Bummer on the stomach bug, though.

Not sure if I posted it earlier in this thread (and not willing to read back to check!), but when I was in the Harwood Jazz band, we played at Berklee. Took first place in 2006, scored well enough for 2nd place in 2007 (but were disqualified for going over the time limit by 8 seconds...). Our small ensemble took 1st in 2007.

Thanks! We just got our trophy today. The kids are psyched.

Small world again, when I was at a conference in CT this week, I met two kids who live in Waterbury and attend Harwood. We chatted about the jazz program quite a bit. I guess they sound good but at the IAJE festival in Burlington they didn't win, which is a first. Nice guys. I hope to hear them at the Discover Jazz Festival.

As with any program, I think it depends on the talent each year. A huge part is direction, but at least part of it is that "star" soloist or three that not only rip great solos, but also really glue their sections together. Some years you have them, some years ya don't! I went to a Harwood concert a month or so ago. Thought they sounded great. Maybe not quite as good as a couple years ago, but still superior to most other high school jazz bands I've heard.

I understand that completely. This is the first year in a while we have had two RIPPING soloists. In the past, our band has been super tight but we have had nothing in the way of soloists. Bruce Sklar is a fantastic musician and seems like a great teacher. There are some great vidoes on YouTube of the Harwood Jazz Group.
