Hello everyone,

I'm new to this site and this is my first post.

I'm looking to do a solo overnight backpack in the Adirondacks this weekend and would love to hear some suggestions. During the summers in WA state, I enjoy 15 mile, 7000 ft elevation gain dayhikes. I value variety of terrain as much as quality of views. My only trip into the Adirondacks was a dayhike of Marcy on a rainy June day (and I loved it). I've been thinking about doing Algonquin but I'm worried it's too short for an overnight. I'm hoping to camp in the wilderness. I have crampons but neither snoshoes nor skis. I'm open to fishing, too.

Any input would be great. I don't have to climb a mountain or walk a ridge, just think of me as the brother in law from out of state to whom you want to show off the beauty of your local range.

Much appreciated,

Manget

Welcome to the site! :)

You could do Colden and maybe tag on Phelps on day one, camp out at avalanche lake or lake colden, and then do Iroquois, Algonquin, Wright the next day. It's all really just gorgeous and hard to pick the perfect loop.

And btw, snowshoes are required in the ADKs during winter - you will get fined. Borrow or rent them from someone.

Have a good time!

Be careful of the approaching snow storm. There's supposed to be a big Nor'Easter hit on Saturday AM, but I'm not sure of the impact along the Adirondacks. Just be prepared.

As others said, Welcome.

Snowshoes are required for about anything in the Adirondacks above a dusting. You can rent them at EMS but you will want to call them first to make sure the store you are planning on stopping at has them. (www.emsonline.com should show stores. They do have one in Lake Placid)

There are ways to make Algonquin an overnight, other than walking slow. If you have a High Peaks map, look at going through Avalanche Pass or even Indian Pass from ADK Loj.

On another board people were having a Favorite ADK peak poll. Doing an overnight so you can get up Haystack would be worthwhile also. A couple of loops available with Algonquin, IMO Haystack might be more of an out & back trip unless you add more to it.

Gothics

Not sure about winter time, but if season did not matter, and i had anywhere to go in the ADK's it would be the Gothics. Wolfs jaw, Armstorng, Gothics and Sawtooth.

That would be my choice. I only hiked lower and upper Wolfs Jaw many years ago, but I remember how rugged it is with built in latters and hand holds.

Would deffinatly make for an extended trip

Thanks everyone. Your comments are very helpful and will provide me with plenty of inspiration.
Unfortunately, it looks like I may have to delay my trip due to the impending storm, although I'll wait until tomorrow to make my determination.

Anyone who's looking for tips on Mt Tom State Reservation in Western Mass let me know. I know that park well.

Cheers.
