Newer Music You are Embarrassed To Admit You Listen To

To keep with the recent theme. What newer songs/bands do you listen to that you would rather not admit to it because your friends and family see you as a stricktly classic rock fan (or what ever else)

For me, its Black Eyed Peas and Outkast. I find their tunes incredibly catchy. I actually hated them at first and then they grew on me

I thank my 20's aged sons for:

Jimmy Eat World
Unwritten Law
Jets to Brazil
Only two songs off of Queens of the Stoneage (don't know the album)
,,,and a reintroduction to David Bowie. Both Heathen and Reality (saw the Reality tour when it came to Boston)

Not embarassed, but

Here is a glimpse of who I am- I listen to, and sing competitively, Barbershop style music. Heading to Jacksonville FL in Nov for an International Competition. But Classic Rock is my preferred genre.

I do like the James Blunt.
Don't think I'd admit to Ashley Simpson, though, Fortunately, that skeleton is not in my closet. (Marc, the door's wide open on that one. Go to town).
My secret enjoyment (musically) is techno dance. Since I really only ever listen to music when driving, my range is small, but techno is great driving music.

nothing - 99% of the new music that is on the radio today is crap. It's almost embarrassing to listen to pop, R&B, most new metal.

Don't tell me you think Kelly Clarkson or Kanye West have the staying power to still be popular in 20 years, or 10 for that matter. Hey, there was a lot crap out when I was listening to the radio. I just think it's progressively gone downhill. The only newer band I really listen to is Coldplay, and I'm not embarrassed to listen to them. Outside of them, I'll take all my 80's and 90's rock and be happy. I'm not a fan of pop music, particularly today's pop music, and I don't think there's much new good stuff on the rock scene these days. You make it sound like I'm frightened of this new music, like people were with the Beatles. Couldn't be further from the truth.

There is still some good music coming out these days. The obvious ones for me are the bands from the 90s that are still around - Foo Fighters, PJ, RHCP, Oasis (the list goes on). Then there is the occasional song from a newer band that I like as well. If you don't listen to new rock, then how can you say for a fact that you don't like any of it?

For the record, I don't like Kelly Clarkson, Kanye West or pretty much anything from either of their peers.

Sure theres the occasional cool song coming out... But nothing really cool or new..
I think by the end of this summer we'll be into some new styles of music.. Either that or the Doors will become popular again...
It's all cyclical..

Skynyrd and James Gang....too right! Funk 48 and 49, Walk Away...plus other Joe Walsh singles...Rocky Mountain Way (from "The Smoker I Drink, The Player I Get").

Actually...I saw the Eagles about two years ago in the Boston Garden. Joe Walsh was on stage and aside from the Eagles songs he was involved in...they played some of his stuff. A great show!

I would agree, the artists from the 90's who are still kicking around still have pretty decent stuff. I was taking the "newer artist" angle rather than just the music regardless of artist. The bands you mention (all of whom I like) are all established artists. Except for Coldplay, I can't think of any new artist who has hit it big since 2000 that I would make it a point to buy their CD. There have been occasional songs by groups like The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, The Hives, The Vines, etc. that I've enjoyed, but I wouldn't buy their CD, at least not without hearing it first. Besides, I'm getting the feeling they're all one-hit wonders.

The reason I know I don't like any of the new stuff is because when I am listening to the radio, I'll hear a song I like, listen to it, then when it's over, some piece of junk comes on, I listen for 30 second or a minute and then I change the station when I realize it sucks. Then the process is repeated. And this pretty much continues for much of the time I'm in the car.

I agree with you for the most part. I really don't listen to a lot of new music either. I think there are a lot of one hit wonders and there are even a few songs I like in there. I thought you were just totally dismissing the genre and all new music. I find that most new music that I listen to is from a core set of groups that I have been listening to for a while. If I do find the occasional single that I like I tend to just dl it from iTunes.
