Trails Hiked: Lonesome Lake, Cascade Brook, Kinsman Pond, Kinsman Ridge
Total Distance: 8.2 mi
Difficulty: Moderate
Conditions: Mostly sunny in the 60's
Trip Report:
I drove to the Lafayette Campground parking area and started off on the Lonsome Lake Trail around 9am. The weather was nice - a little cool but I started off with a t-shirt knowing that I'd be sweating before long. The trail cuts through the campground where there were a few occupied sites. It settled into a comfortable pace (nice to have a light daypack on today). The trail was dry and before long I made it to Lonesome Lake and junction with Cascade Brook Trail:
Cascade Brook Trail follows the edge of the lake and comes to the Lonesome Lake Hut. Here I took the Fishin' Jimmy Trail for a little over 2 miles to Kinsman Ridge. The muddy sections weren't too bad and easily avoided by some careful rock stepping. There are a few ups and downs along the way to the ridge. I arrived at the summit of N. Kinsman around 11:30. There is no view at the summit but there is a nice ledge facing East towards Franconia Ridge nearby. There were some light clouds in the notch which never allowed a view of the complete ridge, but they were still very nice. Liberty and Flume on the southern end:
Lonesome Lake and a partial view of the ridge:
Some more clouds:
After a short lunch I started down around noon, deciding to leave South Kinsman for another day. Finished up a little after 2pm, stopped at the Common Man in Ashland for some wings and a brew and headed home.
