Resort or Ski Area: Okemo Mtn.

Conditions: Machine Groomed PP

Trip Report:

Spent today and yesterday carving up the slopes of Okemo.

Wednesday 12/23:

Skied from 9am till around 3:30 on Wednesday and with a few breaks to warm up, managed to log almost 35,000 feet of descent. It was pretty damn cold up on the hill with temps hovering in the single digits combined with a blustery northwest wind. Skies remained mostly cloudy with intermittent snow showers although the sun did peak out a few times in the afternoon. The snow was beautiful machined groomed corduroy on almost all the trails and I was impressed on the quantity and quality of the available terrain. Most trails are covered well from edge to edge and didn't hit a thing all day. Kudos to the snowmakers at Okemo for what has been an impressive effort. Hard to imagine the season started only three weeks ago and already over 75% of the skiable terrain is open for business and the majority of that with a good machine made base. Word on the street is that as of last weekend 185 million gallons of water has been pumped up the hill to the guns, amazing!

Thursday 12/24:

Rolled out of bed early and decided to hit up the free hour before returning back to Connecticut. I was waiting at the Northstar Express at 10 minutes till 9 and grabbed second chair! Managed to log just over 10,000 feet of decent by the time I exited the slopes a little after 10am, not to shabby. The weather was quite a bit warmer this morning and the untracked, perfectly manicured slopes where reason enough to rip 6 non-stop, top to bottom runs. Sweet! Just what the doctor ordered!

Sorry to hijack this TR, but I have a random Okemo question: if it dumps on New Years, will they leave much ungroomed? Do they have enough of a base left to make the trees skiable (and open)? I've never been there, and I'm limited to bus trips for the New Years' weekend. Trying to figure out my best options, depending on what happens to the projected storm.

Thanks, and nice pics!

Okemo usually doesn't groom (at least everywhere) if it snows overnight. The following day, however, it'll be completely groomed out. Occasionally they'll do a half and half: one side of a trail groomed, one not.

Don't now how they'd handle it on a holiday, though.

Unmarked trees might be good to go depending on how much snow falls. There's not a ton of base snow in the woods but it's got to be pretty solid by now and with a nice foot of fresh on top, well you know......... :snow:
