LUDLOW, Vermont -- Halfpipe enthusiasts rejoice – Okemo Mountain Resort is the first in the East to open a superpipe this winter. Snowboarders and twin-tippers can now enjoy the 420-foot long SoBe Superpipe. With decks spaced 50-feet apart and walls measuring 18-feet high, the debut of Okemo's SoBe Superpipe proves that winter has arrived in southern Vermont.

When Okemo VP and General Manager Bruce Schmidt received word from Assistant Mountain Manager Eb Kinney, at 5:30 Tuesday morning, saying, "The pipe is done," he responded with a message of congratulations to the entire operations crew, saying, "We couldn't have done it without you guys … first superpipe in the East!"

Okemo Freeride Team members Benji Farrow and T.J. James were the first snowboarders to have the honor of riding the SoBe Superpipe this season. Okemo's SoBe Superpipe is located in the Dew Zone. It is maintained regularly with a Zaugg Pipe Monster and the pipe is serviced by its own lift – The Pull surface lift.

The SoBe Superpipe has been completed in time for Okemo's first halfpipe competition of the season, the Lyndsey Baron Memorial, scheduled for Sunday, January 28. The event is open to skiers and snowboarders of all ages. Registration is scheduled from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Okemo Clocktower Base Lodge mezzanine and the registration fee is $20. The competition is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. in the SoBe Superpipe. Prizes and awards will be provided by the series sponsors: SoBe, ScottUSA, Dakine, Obermeyer, Salomon, Atomic Snowboards, Level Gloves, and Mountain Dew. Every competitor entered in the contest will receive a Lindsey Baron "Bubba" T-shirt with their registration. All proceeds from the competition will be donated to the Lindsey Baron "Bubba" Foundation, which raises money for scholarships and programs that promote acts of kindness and reward and encourage the values which Lindsey embraced: friendliness, inclusiveness, unselfishness, citizenship and empathy.
