My wife has a conference to go to the 2nd week of December. It's being held at the Canyons Grand Summit hotel. Will there be enough snow then to be worth tagging along for an extended weekend?

What say you?

/I know, not Northeast, but I know what the skiing is like here then...

I think Alta and Snowbird have been getting a fair amount of snow already. Canyons doesn't get as much as them, but you can always drive around. But, then who the hell knows.

Mom used to winter in Park City so I'm pretty familar with the early season there. Brighton usually opens first since they have that intermediate terrain running up the middle of the resort. AltaBird is pretty good odds for the first part of December. The three Park City resorts aren't great odds. You are pretty likely to hit nothing but manmade terrain that is little better than New England. The drive from The Canyons to Alta or Brighton won't kill you since it's so close to I-80 but it's close to an hour. It's completely flat roads from The Canyons to downtown Park City. You'll have no problem dealing with the hill up I-80 from Salt Lake City in a midsize FWD rental car with all season radials but there might be some days where you opt to park in the lot at the base of Big Cottonwood Canyon and take the bus or hitch a ride up to AltaBird or Brighton/Solitude. AWD rentals might be cheap at that time of year but it's crazy-expensive at peak season. Rental cars are also cheaper in Park City so you could grab something like a Subaru for a day to drive to AltaBird.

I got to spend the month of December in Salt Lake City in 2003. It was some of the most fantastic skiing I ever did out there. Plenty of snow and being pre holiday, empty. Would definately take at least your boots and outer gear with you.

Last December when I was at Alta (80% open), PC had only two trails open .
No big deal, just drive over to either Big or Little Cottonwood Canyons they should have snow.

I will be making my first of four trip to Alta the second week of December.

Trip to Utah with free lodging?? You gotta go. The 'hotel sex' alone is worth the price of admission, right?

If the snow does not cooperate, you can always drive out to Wendover. Tons of easy hikes in the Silver Island Range....truly a must see.

If you go, don't forget about Snowbasin outside of Ogden. They should have quite a bit of coverage by then.......600+ acres of snowmaking as well as a great lift system.
