BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Yup, that infamous Jay Cloud and Jay Marketing Machine kicking in again. Sure, Yup, believe that when I see it. Bet those pics were taken two months ago in the February storm for sure.

:dunce: :spin: :fangun:

No, those are clearly showing snow on no base. Blue jacket has snowmaking hydrants in the background sticking way up, red jacket has brush that would normally be buried.

Why does it look deep? Blue jacket looks like a shorter woman leaning over mid turn, and is behind a small ridge or drift of snow. Probably about ankle deep. Red jacket looks like a telemarker mid turn and probably isn't that tall either.

Another point to be made is water content of the snow. At Jay, you have to be there the day of the storm and hope it isn't tooo windy. They measure out more snow because it's lower density (generally a good thing). But a day or two after, this snow has settled quite a bit due to wind, temps, etc. So if they report 3 feet on Wednesday, it's going to measure at 1.5 ft on Saturday, give or take. This also means they really don't have the base of like, Stowe.

Do you think Jay hires dwarfs for all their pics?

I haven't researched it but I recall Jay staying open later than Stowe the last few years, so I don't think they compare in that respect. Jay has made a real effort the last 3 years to offer a product late into the season and be one of a few resorts in the east to offer late April/early May skiing.

Last 3 seasons Jay Peak has been open for the 1st weekend of May. There is enough snow to last well into June on the Haynes and Jet. If temperature remain seasonnal and it doesn't rain too much, i would be able to score birthday turns! (never happened... and i don't go as far as Washington when biking season is on!)

What?Stowe closed because they had NO base while Jay stayed open on their" less base than Stowe base.

I'm guessing Jay retains snow just slightly better and they probably blow a bit more snow on the one lift they keep open, the Triple, which is also a short lift and their mid-season fall back lift for bad conditions. Stowe doesn't really have a short lift like that they think is valueable to keep open, even though they probably could. If they had an upper mountain lift with up and downloading (harrrr), and found value in it, I'm sure they would have no problem staying open.

I make my statements based on trips to Jay and Stowe on the same weekend. Stowe may have reported less snowfall, but seems to have more base, on average. Stowe is closer to lake champlain and has a more substantial mountain ridge/basin to extract moisture from storms. Jay is just a single peak out in the middle of nowhere.

While your geographic statements of location are essentially accurate, your conclusions are completely false. Lake Chaplain is not a catch for NoVT except in rare circumstances and never provides the bulk of the moisture even then. Jay's topography is what causes its massive snow fall, it does not get the most snowfall in the north east despite it. You can site your preference for one mountain or the other but your reasons are suspect and your science is just plain wrong.

Ankle deep.......

Riiiiiiight.

My son postholed up to his mid-thigh. On a trail....not in a drift, which were deeper. When you have 2+ feet of dense powder, who needs base. Goat had better coverage on the upper sections than it did anytime I skied it this winter. Green Mountain boys was deep wall to wall.
