I heard a blurb on the news that powder ridge was shutdown for this season di anyone else hear anything about this? I think they shouuld hold out and see what thisstorm does if the closing is due to weather. I can imagine the ridge is having a hard time because of their location in southern ct.

I am beyond pissed about this. This is the first full season getting the wife and 5 yr. old on the slopes. Since "Muddy Bump" is within 30 min. from home, we got season passes there for this year. Also signed the wife and kid up for classes. The wife had 2 to go, the kid still had 1. They never really got more than 1 trail open, and I know the weather didn't cooperate, but all the other areas in CT seemed to be able to manage.

Oh well....looks like we may do the Nutterbut passes for next year...

 Whoa! That is really, really, extreme. I hope that they are going to at least refund the money to the passholders. Think of the employees and their families as well...

This reminds me of another ski area, whose name I won't mention, that stiffed some people three years ago on 'Super Early Season Passes' and then they never opened

The hard part is that they're taking the weather excuse as far as they can. I sent off an email to them in early Jan when they were having some problems and were closing sporadically. They were using the weather as an excuse to close at the same time Mt. Southington (maybe 10 miles away) was 100% open. Its really frustrating when, like I mentioned, the other ski areas in CT are doing at least okay. There have been a few closings here and there, mostly during the monsoon like days, but they are all still open at or near 100%.

And Powder Ridge has the Pres. of the Chamber of Commerce echoing their weather woes. I don't think that's going to help our case, Larry is a pretty tough nut.

The ski area's owners would not comment on the reason for the closing, but said they hope to reopen next year, the Middletown Press reported.

Why do I get the feeling?.........

I've had a few friends buy season passes at Powder Ridge and part of me says, T.S., you know they barely blow snow, barely ever groom.

But the other part of me says damn, when you sell a season pass, there is an implied agreement that P.R. will at least put in a decent effort. Which they certainly have not done in the slightest.

Let's see if they reopen tomorrow.

i am not familiar with this ski area, but the business man in me says that you don't stiff season pass holders this year while expecting to reopen next year. your loyal customers will desert you. the old saying is "fool me once, shame on you. fool me twice... don't never get fooled again..." or something like that ;) seems likely this area is unfortunately going the way of the lost. i can't imagine then stiffing season pass holders this year and not expect severe and likely permanent effects on their season pass sales and ticket sales in general.

from their website,
Mother Nature may be on our side this time. If we receive significant snowfall, Powder Ridge plans to open this week. Stay tuned! 1-877-SKI-RIDGE for details.

so maybe with this storm and the threats from the state on having to compensate season ticket holders they will open back up.

I think it is too little too late for the place. As Riv said, people have already been burned and won't be back. It's sad to say :(

As said, too little, too late.

They left a message on our Vmail about the re-opening. We were in VT this weekend (Yes, I may actually write a trip report) I really don't think its worth trying to make-up the debacle that was the past 2 months. The kid lost a lesson, the wife 2. *Expletive* them. We got the kid a lesson yesterday at Okemo that went very well, and I think, more than made-up for the PR screw-up.
Once bitten, twice shy. Sorry, PR, even though I learned to ski there over 20 years ago, you guys really dropped the ball this year.

I noticed that Sundown did some major stockpiling this season. Even last night I noticed huge mounds of snow that will likely keep them going until the end of March. Granted Sundown is further north, but the crappy weather that almost ended the Ridge's season was experienced by all CT ski areas. I spoke with Dotty Craig, Sundown's marketing director in December and they were able to open early this season because they stockpiled a ton of snow they blew during that cold snap befire Thanksgiving. Had they spread it around, they would have lost it all in the warmup after Turkey Day.
