Snow Conditions
  1. Packed Powder
  2. Ice
There were six objectives for our Presidents week ski trip.
1. Visit Tenney Mountain. Local mountain to our holiday house near Plymouth, but we never managed a visit.
2. Ski Kinsman Glade at Cannon (son only)
3. Ski face chutes at Jay (son only)
4. Do the loop-the-loop slide at the Jay water park (daughter only, she was under the minimum weight last time we visited)
5. Hike to summit of every mountain we skied (husband)
6. Avoid lift lines.

Day 1: Sunday 15 Feb. Tenney Mountain. Yes, we made it! Failed on the hike objective because we enjoyed the skiing so much. A much bigger feeling mountain that I expected, snow was good. Minimal lines ( a little on the Hornet) and quiet runs. They deserve to succeed. And with proximity to I93, they should succeed. And with a better lift I think they would. I know the slow lift makes the argument “it means the runs are quiet”. And that is true for weekends and holidays. But for a midweek ski most people want to do some fast laps in a couple of hours and the get back to work. We enjoyed our half day there. Fingers crossed for them. Returned to our house in Plymouth for overnight.
Day 2: Monday 16 February. Cannon Mountain. No lines. Best snow I’ve ever had there. First time made it to Mittersal. Son made it down Kinsman glade, hiked to Zoomer and back up Zoomer before I made it down from lunch at the summit. Hubby hiked Cannon and met us for lunch. All objectIves achieved. Drove to Burke for 2 night stay.
Day 3 Tuesday 17 February: Burke Mountain. No lines. Good snow. Husband hiked to summit. All objectives achieved.
Day 4 Wednesday 18 February: Burke Mountain. I wasn’t sure this would be a 2 day mountain, but it absolutely was. We kept finding new trails we hadn’t done. I think me new favorite Indy NE location. So quiet. Really like it here. Drove to Jay for 2 night stay.
Day 5 Thursday 19 February. Jay peak. This ended up being the worse conditions and most crowded. No lift lines in singles (other than Tram of course) but runs felt busy and super icy. At 3.15 commited to Tram line. Son skied face chutes. Was back at condo before I made it down the blue. People were walking down Vermonter it was so icy. Husband hiked Jay and Big Jay. All objectives achieved.
Day 6 Friday 20th. Decided not to ski, had such a good trip didn’t want to risk anything with ice and crowds. And with snow forecast wanted to get driving. Waterpark morning. Surfing (first hour after they open lines are not too bad). Loop-the-loop slide completed. All objectives achieved. Drive back to MA in afternoon just beating the snow.

A good trip.

Very nice trip!

Agree whole heartedly about Tenney. At minimum a mid station unload for the Hornet would help their situation. I'm not sure a lift that old could be retrofitted though unfortunately.

It's a tough balance to both modernize the place, but also keep it uncrowded and affordable and thus maintain the great vibe it has. You kind of half to stick with FG lifts to do that. Put a High Speed chair in and the place could turn into Ragged on weekends. (Never thought I'd speak that way about Ragged, but the secret is out there)

Nice. I'm interested in pics and thoughts on Burke.
We really enjoyed Burke. Although the main mountain is only served by a single express lift there seemed to be masses of runs. If you like glades either far left (skiers left) beyond Willougby and skiers right heading toward East Bowl.
The snow was good and even for a holiday week the main lift was pretty much ski in. There was a steep T-bar for the race team which kept them to one run and out of the main lift line.
There is a lower part to the mountain served by a short ”express “. Though it ran so slowly it was hardly an express. Green runs, terrain parks and kiddie glades. Keeps the beginners away from the main mountain.
The only limitation I see is for low intermediates. The lower mountain greens are nice and easy for beginners. But the blues on the main mountain are relatively steep for blues. Certainly steeper than Blues at many smaller mountains. So maybe a gap for those wanting to get off the greens.

we stayed at the Burke Mountain hotel right on the slopes. Great location but a little odd. From the outside there were signs for a bar, a restaurant, a coffee shop and a day lodge. The restaurant and coffee shop don’t exist. Not closed, simply not there. The day lodge closed by mid afternoon. So only the bar for dinner. Which was fine. They also had a kids arcade . Luckily ours are too old for arcades but I walked through and almost every game was out of service. So the hotel was nice, but they could do more with it. But I think others have said, they are too far for day trippers and the vacation crowd continue to Jay.

The picture in the woods above is from one of the glades. I’ll try and find some more

If you’re looking at the hotel with your back to the HSQ, I think the restaurant is on the lower right. Not certain but the bar obviously is a perfectly serviceable restaurant anyway.

The coffee shop, I can’t picture unless they mean the small cafe in the “day lodge” of the hotel.

They briefly had a coffee bar just past the ski shop. Right by the locker rooms and fitness room.

Willoughby’s was open over Christmas with the same menu as the View Pub.
