Resort or Ski Area: Ragged Mt.

Conditions: loose granular, some packed powder, edgeable firm base, very few slick spots

Trip Report: Family ski day. Blue sky, temps sub 32 * F with lower windchills. The wind did pick up noticably in the afternoon.
I was very pleasantly suprised that the surface, although fast and fairly hard, was very edgeable, allowing for some great carving turns. The lines very very short and for the most part, if you just waited a minute or two on top, you could have an empty slope, so speed was the name of the game. My older boy did get into full-on game of tag with me.

The woods could be accessed from lower entry points and the cover was not bad. I guess the 6 inches of snow that they got this past week really made a difference.
On the groomers, full cover. It's too bad that they will be closing April 3. I guess the low attendance during the week is killing them.
I wonder if they let people climb and ski after the area closes. There could be a very nice potential for some fine corn harvest once spring weather hits again.

Nice report Bumpsis. Ditto for the Saturday. Could really let loose on Flying Yankee.

My video:

Don't go there often but I've never had a chance to go down Flying Yankee. Only time it was open there was a race. Looks like a nice cruiser as long as you don't mind the slow lift.

Flying Yankee is steep enough at the top that it scares off the beginners and gappers but the pitch eases off some so you can really open up for some long swooping carve turns. :daffy: And like Bumpsis said earlier there was just enough snow to ride an edge with complete confidence. :spread:

Thanks for posting the vid, Abubob. I just a little falshback of flying down that trial. Indeed, the initial drop does seem keep slower skiers off it.
When the trail is empty and with good conditions, it's a blast just to open up and do a no-turn run. Just follow the contours of the trails. Well, almost no turns. The first drop really adds some speed.

I believe that we might have shared a chair ride eariler this season. Not too many people out at Ragged with helmet cams.

How does the drop compare with the pitch on Showboat? Not that it would deter me from skiing/skidding down it...

I've been thinking of putting a vid together of people I've ridden up with. I've got a few. I also saw two other people there on Saturday with Gopro cams like mine. I've yet to see any ski mounts though.
