What's the meteorological basis for Maine and NH staying cooler or at least seeming to have greater amounts of snow during the spring?

Third factor is their longitude. Especially with the Alberta Clipper's we've been getting this year, where the more time the lows get out over the Atlantic, the more moisture/intensity they pick up and more snow as a result. NH and ME benefit from this both with the primary storm and backside wrap around bands.

Most of the snowfall that NY/VT gets is from when these lows start to get close to the Atlantic and then head on upto about Cape Cod. NH(especially Eastern) and ME get most of their snowfall from these storms from after the low has been over the Atlantic and have passed Cape Cod and start "feeding" off the Gulf of Maine
