Interesting. Looks like we may have a new metric for when winter begins. When hibernation begins.
According to Cannon:
As many of you may have learned from the Squam Lakes Science Center's live animal presentation at Cannon's homecoming - when groundhogs hibernate, they are done for winter. There's no waking them up. You could pick them up and shake them without response. Armed with that knowledge, our snowmaking crew headed out yesterday to put that to the test. And while they may have sent a few squirrels running to get that last nut, they cranked up the system and officially started the snowmaking season with confidence that the groundhogs, woodchucks and whistle pigs that live on Big Link, Middle Cannon and Gremlin didn't hear a thing.
