ctenidae - you beat me to the post by about 2 minutes - and I had entitled mine exactly the same. Children of the 70s think alike perhaps.....?

Hunter Thompson apparently blew his brains out last night in Colorado. I guess this makes a compelling argument about drug usage and gun ownership and what happens when you mix the two. But, I will miss his take on the American scene, twisted as it was. Too bad - what causes a national figure to consider suicide as his only option?

I think the prospect of 4 more years of BushCo had something to do with it. (not to get political, there, but still, it's plausable).

Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 gave me such a new perspective on politics, I've never looked at Presidents the same.

I'd say his living until he was 67 is actually points for guns and drugs. The autopsy report will be interesting, though, particularly the toxicology section.

Sandra Dee died, too. Who's the third going to be?

The last I read from him was a rambling missive to his grandson. it wasn't super heavy, if I remember correctly, just a rather soft indictment of American culture and politics. It seemed he was mellowing out in his old age. As it is though, he died true to character...dangerous and unpredictable. C

before i even heard the news, i knew right away who's abbreviation in this thread's subject line stood for despite not knowing a heck of a lot about the man aside from watching the movie johnny depp starred in. the movie itself compelled me to watched a ton of the bonus footage as i wanted to learn a bit more about the character behind the story. personally i thought the movie was kinda blah with exception of that scene at the end of the movie in the diner (man, that was an incredible scene), but the bonus footage was excellent and in my estimation, much more entertaining than a 2 hour long trip. refreshingly a movie without a point!

any ways, quite a writer and a valued contribution to political and cultural landscape has been lost. Caleb nails it on the head in regards to going true to character it seems.

I can proudly say that I don't remember a single word or passage from F&L.
