One of my former coworkers was hit by a car while road biking almost 2 years ago. She used to have a spinning studio and ended up selling it because she was still in a lot of pain from the hit. I'm terrified of that and that's part of the reason why road biking is not really appealing to me. Well, that and the cost of buying another bike. The tri I signed up for is on backroads so I feel a little better about the biking part of it, but I'm still scared.

That's definitely a concern with road biking, unfortunately... :(

I do want to get a road bike at some point though, cars be damned! All I need now is more money...

There are instances where one can do nothing on a road bike to prevent an accident, it's true, but there are also lots of avoidance measures. Knowing what roads to stay on, always riding single file, not listening to music, keeping well aware of your surroundings... I've had a few close calls, in which it was always the driver doing stupid things, usually a result of underestimating my speed, but if you're cautious, it can certainly be done safely.

I often see the biggest offenders of safe riding practice on very expensive bikes and in team kit... I think some who race regularly think they own more road than drivers will regularly yield to them.

I think I've just read too many horror stories on the net. That and seeing how bad people drive on a daily basis, even with no bikes around, worries me.

Running season? I run in the winter because it has way less wind chill than biking, then I cycle in the summer for the cooling effect of the wind. I can understand how you'd prefer to run and not go drop 2 grand on a road bike though. I've been running a bit due to the encouragment of my girlfriend. I can go decent distances (5+ miles) but still very slow. Like I've always been. I think that's why I prefer cycling. I need the speed to keep me entertained.

Hey! Go get yer own thread to flub up, Marc! :p ;)

Anybody who bitches about not being able to run should check out the Couch to 5K plan. I've said it before, but it took me from not being able to run 30 seconds to running a 5K last year in 9 weeks of training. You CAN do it!
