10 Members of the Latin Kings Gang Arrested on Long Island
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Ten members of the Huntington Station-area chapter of the Latin Kings gang were arrested by the FBI late Wednesday and Thursday. Among those arrested is the man identified as the alleged leader of the Huntington-area chapter, Angel Cordero Jr.
The gang is accused of terrorizing the area with robberies, assaults and shootings.
Mona Rivera Reports
Police believe they’ve dealt a devastating blow to the group with the recent string of arrests.
The crackdown came as an effort to clamp down on the violence that has hit the area in recent years.
Those arrested have been hit with wide-ranging charges including: conspiracy, assault with a dangerous weapon, distribution of cocaine, solicitation of assault with a dangerous weapon, and gun trafficking.
Sources say the FBI and Long Island police have been actively investigating the street gang since 2007. The decision to make the arrests at this time was made to prevent possible heightening of violence between rival gangs.
One defense lawyer, however, says the case is weak citing that the entire case is built on the word of a single informant.
