Here's an audio clip from NPR talking about the new generation of workers in need of self esteem. Anybody who has been recently involved in the public schools via parent/teacher conference or orientation should know that they have strongly emphasize this and have been for quite a while. Now we are seeing the results of such programs.

There was a similar article last month in the Wall St Journal I think it was titled
"Most Praised Generation" The article discussed the issues some of the members of this generation may have when entering the work force without their parents around to boost their egos when needed. I think the more we praise and coddle mediocrity the lower the bar we set for our future generations.....

that noise you just heard was the rest of the world passing us.

Self esteem may be important, but I think it's a lot more effective if gained for actually doing something. If you ahve to be told constantly how wonderful you are, chances are, you aren't.

It's not only the parents but also the schools (in general terms) ; at grade level, the teachers do not stretch the limits of the students. They teach to a certain standard/level....IMO, a low level.

I have read that some professors from prestigious universities talk about grade inflation; some have justified it given that college is so expensive that students should get higher grades just due to cost and not merit.

Going into retirement in a second class economy doesn't sound to appealing to me.
