Should Resorts Open on Christmas Day????

At first I thought no, but now I think they should stay open as long as they treat the employees right, I think they have to give them at least time and a half pay by law, but maybe an extra incentive would be good too. I agree that the big ones, such as K-Mart and the others should be open because it is a critical vacation time for them.

Christmas is for family time. Shut down the internet on Christmas and Thanksgiving.

I don't think anything should be opened on Christmas day except maybe hopitals, police, and emergency services. Spend the time with the family. Get to know each other.

I don't like shopping on Sundays either. I figure I don't want to force others to work on Sunday so I don't shop on Sundays. I believe NJ stores are closed on Sundays which is vey cool.

A few years ago in Germany the stores were only opened on Saturday until 1pm. They closed on Sundays. Also midweek they were closed after 6pm.

All families spend time together in different ways. Maybe some families want to spend that time together by skiing. Also, if you are working in that type of industry or many others, you know what you are getting yourself into in terms of work days.

Good point! One of the few activites we ever did as a family was ski and now when we get together it is usually to ski or in the Summer the talk migrates back to family ski trips.

Skiing for me is form of worship and I like it when my churches are open.

It's just that there are some days that our society does not open for--government and Wall Street, etc aren't open on Saturday or Sundays. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's are also days that things are not usually open. I was just asking what you thought about Christmas.

I was waiting for this clarification. Based on the national holiday scenario only, NO WAY ski areas should close.

I'm going skiing this x mas. There ll hardly be anybody out on the mountain. Easter is the most important Christian holiday, I'll stay home then.

My job is in an office that has to stay open 24/7/365. It is understood that you will have to work some holiday's sometimes. I think getting a job at a ski resort you should kind of consider this. But yeah, extra compensation or appreciation helps out. Some employees may actually volunteer for holiday's due to the extra compensation if they are of another religion, not religious at all, or not into tradition.

Skiing on Christmas Day....I do it every year (even in the rain--like last year).

No lines, great way for the family to celebrate (and try out any new ski stuff under the tree)!

Many of the bigger places are in fact open earlier. Seems kinda wrong IMHO. Should be a day of rest, but then again, these places have a lot of holiday skiers, so maybe compromise by having a late opening.

Just a thought...not EVERYONE celebrates XMAS....ever think of that? I do, but am floored that some think its a NATIONAL holiday...its not..its purely religious..hence the reason som of these places open..if I took a minute to think about it i'd probably be angry that EVERYTHING closes due to a religious holiday..what do the people that aren't that religion do? We dont close everything down for Passover or Chanukka? Why xmas...

By the way I am catholic by unbringing...

FYI Christmas is a national holiday. The government does not open. No mail, no courts, etc, etc.

My point is it shouldnt be...seperation of church and state and all....it doesnt seem right. Thanks though..like I didnt know all that...

Honestly - if you work in the hotel/resort business - you are accustomed to working holidays - its part of the job.

I've worked Christmas day 8 out of the past 10 years and have learned to adjust my schedule to visit family and appreciate the holidays and togetherness usually a few days before Christmas

Its just part of life when you work in the industry. You have to accept the fact that you're going to have to work nights, weekends, holidays etc. If your looking for the 9 to 5 job with weekends and holidays off - the tourism industry is a bad place to look.

Who am I to tell people how to spend their Christmas? If you got the bucks, you could probally have a bang up Christmas on the slopes. As far as people having to work on Christmas. . . there's a lot of people who used to work the company that I work for who wish they had a job this Christmas.

Having two daughters that work at a ski resort I wish they would be closed, but that is not realistic. I do however think that opening late is a reasonable accommodation.

True. Of course, that's a whole other issue of how there is supposed to be separation of church and state but there really isn't. We won't go there...

Opening late would be the best compromise...at least give the employees a chance to spend the morning with their families.

I will likely never ski on Christmas...for me at least, there has to be times when the family stuff takes priority. I would not, however, expect anyone else to do the same.

IMO it does not matter whether it's a national holiday or not...look at all of the other "holidays" when ski areas are open (New Years, MLK day, President's day, etc.).

Skiing with my family on Christmas takes priority... I love skiing with my family.. It brings us closer together...
