Good thread idea :)

We could also pick a resort on the east (or west) and try to find the most comporable on the opposite side.

Example: Taos is the __________ of the East.

Have not been Taos, but from the sounds of it, it has similar qualities to Smuggs

Yeah, that sounds about perfect. Both are "highly ranked" ski areas with no high speed lifts but great terrain. Also, they do have a similar vibe and a good amount of lodging that doesn't intrude on the mountain. Taos is more known for it's adult ski school, while Smuggs is known more for their kids programs.

Alta/ Snowbird eguals Platty with nataral snow being jighest in their regions .

If anything in Northern Utah equals Platty it would be Powder. But I hear that's more crowded these days, so I not sure I would even go with that. WAY too much going on at Alta/Snowbird for it to feel anything like Platty, at least for me.

For Platty I'll go with Discovery in MT. Same laid back feel, hand me down lifts, and minimal crowds compared to every thing else near it.

I meant that Powder is the more crowded place. I don't think Platty could ever get really crowded, no where to park.

I think it may have been the day after an 18" storm this year, people were parked about a half mile down the access road at Platty. I still don't think I waited in line for more than a couple chairs. I was surprised to see the cars when I left. I've never seen cars parked on the access road there before, seeing them extend so far down the road was almost shocking. Good for Laszlo, I do remember the lodge being a zoo, but the impact on the skiing experience was minimal.

I think the Taos, Smuggs analogy is pretty accurate. Maybe Taos, MRG more so, they both have reputations as expert mountains, but there's plenty of terrain at both to satisfy less than expert skiers...like me! Also, until a few years ago, snowboarders were not welcome at either.

Would Killington and Whistler be fair comps for the purposes of this thread? I realize WB is unlike anything in he East but K seemed to be the closest comparable

I've skied Taos and really can't think of an east coast analogy. It's uniqueness comes from its isolation. It's kind of in the middle of nowhere. I mean there is other cool stuff in the area, but it's totally incongruous with skiing (desert, artist retreats, native American culture, etc). Probably the closest New England comparison I can think of is Sugarloaf.

My comparison for Taos to Smuggs was based out of the common complaints I've read about both areas. "Stuck in the 70s" "No High Speed lifts" "Old School Lodging"....and also the common compliments of both areas having a great laid back groovy "vibe". Both areas are also decent sized (not huge though) and are fairly well known for their exceptional slack country terrain - Kachina Peak at Taos and the Birthday Bowls at Smuggs. I suppose MRG would also fit such a criteria, but I think of Taos having a bit more development, where as MRG is just a ski area (but does have resort amenities nearby being adjacent to Sugarbush). I would think another apt comparison for Taos would be Saddleback....and Saddleback certainly fits your isolation thoughts Cannonball.

When I think of a comparison for Sugarloaf in the west, two places come to mind - Mammoth and Big Sky. All three are aesthetically massive mountains with majestic conical peaks. They all have huge vert, acreage, famous expert terrain and developed lodging/villages at their bases, but aren't renowned for great apres/dining. And all of them are a complete pain in the ass to get to.

For expansive area sure but I would compare it more towards an area who has many peaks with short lifts......fill in the blank
