I don't see any detail of what "ski mountaineering" is.

I know of several competition that involves both uphill and downhill. Ski-mo (spelling?) is going up on skins and skiing down. But that's on established paths. "Mountaineering" to my mind involves ropes and ice axes. Not sure what exactly is the event IOC is adding.

So the "front side-i-zation" of a back country origin sport has long ago complete. Hence the IOC's approval of the event. Makes sense then.
