Volunteers needed for J2 Eastern Championships
Published: Monday, February 23, 2009 1:56 PM EST
The Mount Mansfield Ski and Snowboard Club and Stowe Mountain Resort this week are hosting the J2 Eastern Championships and the club is seeking volunteers to help put the races on.
"We really need to recruit volunteers. These are big races and these kids have worked so hard to qualify, so we really want to hold high-quality races," Tegan Angier, the club's race secretary said.
Angier is seeking gatekeepers, scoreboard volunteers and hand timers and said compensation will be offered in the form of tickets for the day and vouchers for a future day of skiing.
About 200 skiers will compete Feb. 25-27 in two giant slaloms and one slalom in the Eastern J2 Championships. Along with the athletes will be dozens of coaches and parents. The J2 Easterns come amid a season of ski racing on Main Street that has included Eastern Cups, the UVM Carnival and J2 States. And the verdict among Vermont’s racing elite is that rolling, twisting and occasionally steep south-facing Main Street is among the best racing hills in the East, if not the nation.
The three days of racing next week serve as the J2 season finals and qualifiers for the J2 U.S. Nationals scheduled for the first week of March in Aspen, Colo.
If interested in working the races, call 253-7704.
