You used to teach at Hunter? You mentioned sometime in the early 90's...were you there during the Karl Plattner days or did you start after Hunter took the franchise over?

I started in 1990 and taught through 2003. Worked my way into a seasonal program group, but got disgruntled with all of the ski school management issues. Left when it wasn't any fun anymore.

So what's your ski school story?

D, you're funny!

Nah, no lifetime passes for long teaching service like the dearly departed Rangers.

Besides which, they deserved it because they got no "pay". Wonder if Hunter is going to honor those lifetime passes for Rangers with more than 10 years.

Was thinking the same thing...
I know lots of people that retired from the Rangers and got lifetimes..

Too bad they disbanded them... But not really a big deal since most jumped to patrol last spring...

How come they got rid of the Rangers? They are the same type of patrol as I'm in at Whiteface (Mountain Host)except we belong to NSP.

I seem to remember the Rangers didn't get to ski for free unless they were working and you had to be on staff for a long time before your family got their passes comped. Now they're getting Lifetime passes? That's great.

Do you remember the Couresty Patrol JimmyG.?

Dont remember if it was franchise or not..it was 90-92 I think??...I left because 1) I couldnt take commuting that early on Sat mornings from Jersey. Those were the "party" days so early mornings were rarely my friends ;) 2) there were a few people I didnt jibe with so..i did dig teaching kids moldable like clay :D

They were part of NSP too...

I think it was politics that put the nail in the coffin...

Just like what happened to Courtesy Patrol

Of course; most of the old courtesy patrollers became Rangers. Alot of them will now be part of the ski patrol.

Sometimes I miss working for the mountain, but not often.

That would be during the Plattner (good old) days. Yeah, an early AM commute like that would've killed me in my drinking days. You didn't have a place to stay while on staff?

I'll take a wild guess and say that one of the people you didn't jibe with was I.J. Ture. Few folks did. But for the most part, the people who were there at that time I really liked.

Kids rule. I did the line instructor/private lesson thing for years, but when I got my seasonal program gig I coached 7-11 year old kids. These were advanced skiers who were in the process of deciding between racing and freestyle, so I got to ski them everywhere until we dropped. Or until I dropped anyway.

I do miss teaching, but I've got my own kids now and teaching them is something I can't miss out on. Soon enough they'll be blowing me away.

I'd like to join Ski Patrol someday...
But they won't let me join with my beard...

facial hair rules are silly IMHO...i mean I could maybe understand them not allowing you to GROW one while on staff, but if you already have a full beard and keep it nice, its shuoldnt be an issue..I mean geez we're outside...and I bet it keeps ya warm...? Would take me a LONG time to grow a nice thick full beard, so I don't try...i can never get past the "itchy" part..

eh..
