Skiing with a Hernia

Well I just found out that I have a hernia. It is in my lower abdomen not the groin. Anyway I am scheduled to see a surgeon on 3/18 and my doc said as long as it does not bother me there should be no problem continuing to ski. I am going to Elk on Friday and will give it a shot! I don't necessarily mind taking it "easy" but I am not sure how hard I want to push it. I am a strong intermediate who normally enjoys long, steep cruisers. Avoiding bumps is not a concern, I don't like 'em that much anyway!

Has anyone continued to ski after a hernia diagnosis?

Thanks,

Marc

No experience on the hernia front (knock on wood), but I do know that Canada has a clinic that does hernias, exclusively. Supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread. You're up the same day (they don't let you lay around), and their recovery time is something like half the normal time. I don't remember where the palce is, though I think tehy ahve a few clinics now, but I seem to recall there being mountains nearby. Skiing as PT wouldn't be so bad.
So, to conclude the absolute uselessness of this post, there's a place somewhere called something where they do a thing. You should look into it.

Good luck, no matter what.

Had hernia diagnosis and repair during the off season (summer and fall) so I have no ski related tales to tell.

Overall before the repair I felt like someone had landed a good kick square where it counts. I was failry active but had no desire for strenuous excercise. After it was fixed I was my old self after 2-3 weeks.

I guess it depends on how hard you ski and how often you fall. I spend a fair amount of time on the slope picking my self up and dusting myself off (half lack of talent and half lack of sense) and I can't imagine that I would have enjoyed skiing the way I do with the hernia I had. If you go down hard on something steep or chopped up it could take a little out of you.

Good Luck.

So gores95 - how did it go - ?? Problems??

Although I was supposed to go skiing yesterday I had to cancel. I am going to try this weekend and my doc has given me the green light. My appointment with the surgeon is on the 18th and I am probably going to schedule the surgery as quickly after that as possible.

Thanks for the replies!
