Trip Report:
day 1 - 1/28
my buddies and i left newark on 7am flight to salt lake on thursday. we arrived at 10am local time. hopped on the canyon shuttle to the lodge at entry 3. the ride took 30 minutes. we arrived at the lodge by 10:45. checked in to the room, ate a quick lunch and rented a demo snowboard. i wanted to demo the lib tech skate banana, but it was out. so, i took the never summer SLR. it was 1pm. took the tram up to the peak.
sunny mid 20's. went up to low 30's. the shuttle driver told us that they got 7 feet in 7 days and most areas were open, but not all areas were open due to avi control. so, we just decided to check out the mineral basin first. went down skier's right from the mineral basin express chair. most of the bowl was all bumped up already, but there were so much powder. it was no face shot kinda day, though. after couple of runs we decided to get out of mineral basin and go to the front side. the gad valley was closed and they said it would open the next day. we had several fun runs and headed down to the cliff lodge base. it was 2:30. snow condition was real nice and soft. 1-2 feet of snow was the average, but not the freshie kind. we headed back up after a 15 minute break and did a few more runs before wraping up at 4pm. the never summer board was real stiff. it was heavy thick and not to my liking. went to christy's to check out if the skate banana was in. no luck.
day 2 - 1/29
sunny mid 20's. went up to low 30's. got up and had the breakfast. went to christy's to check out if skate banana was in. no luck again. i decided to just check out something random. ended up picking up nitro magnum.
the gad valley was open. the patrols were shooting shells and blasting dynamites since the day before. took the first tram at 9am to the peak. took the road to provo and traversed to gad valley. it was truly sweet. knee deep powder, but since the snow was a few days old and had a few nites of cold weather created a little bit of top crust. but, no complaints. it sweeeeeeet. we laped it all morning and decided to head for lunch at the mid station at 1pm. we practically stayed there the whole day. nitro magnum was a pretty bad for my taste. it was wobbly. no control. a bad choice. we got tired by 2:30 and called it a day. went to christy's to check out if banana was in. bingo. it was there. reserved it for the next day.
day 3 - 1/30
sunny mid 20's. got up and had the breakfast. went to christy's to pick up the banana. the tram was down. took the peruvian chair. there was a tunnel serviced via a magic carpet to the other side (mineral basin). the sign in the tunnel said the project cost 2 years and something like $1.4mil. there was an entire face of the bowl that was untouched. no chair serviced, so you had to traverse from the top of baldy chair. it was sweet. there were so much powder in the trees, too. so we lapped the mineral basin all day. took the last chair at 3:30 and headed back to base. on the way down, there were so much untouch powder everywhere. off the chip's run trail, my buddy and i found a gulley that lead down all the way to the base. it was sweeeeeet. no one was there and pow was so fresh.
the lib tech skate banana is unbelievable it was a one sick shtick. it's got a great flex, very soft. it floats and glides thru pow and cuts through crud like butter. it's not for a high speed, but it turns on a dime. no joke. went down to christy's and told them to reserve the board for the next day.
it started to snow on our way to dinner.
day 4 - 1/31
snowed all day. temps in mid 20's. got up and had the breakfast. went to christy's to pick up the banana. we had a 5pm flight home, so we decided to play it safe and ride til 1pm. took the peruvian chair. the snow report said 4", but we quickly realized it was over a foot. all morning it was pounding hard. it was way more than a foot. we were riding mostly under the mineral basin liftline and it was truly sick. faceshot condition all morning. mostly it was knee deep all around and in many parts it was waist deep pow. it was truly unbelievable. but, unfortunately it was time to go home. we headed back to the base, but we decided to go through the gulley we found the day before. it was real fun. got back to christy's by 1pm. took a shower and hopped on the shuttle by 2pm. after checking in and thru the security, it was 3pm. grabbed lunch at the airport. 5pm flight took off on time and landed at newark at 11:15pm. got home at 11:40.
it was a sweeeet trip. here are some fotos:
