I’m guessing these are the overall steepest lift served ski areas in the North East by state. What do you think?

NY – Whiteface
VT – Stowe
NH – Wildcat
ME – Sugarloaf
MA – Jiminy Peak
PA – Ski Denton
RI – Yawho
CT – Sundown
NJ – Mountain Creek

I would nominate Killington or Sugarbush over Stowe for steepest overall. Stowe has 6 steep runs, 2 of them being very steep....

your other picks look good to me!

Perhaps this would be of some help. Okemo kills me! Going by this, Killington has SB beat due to where they actually have trails cut. It's one thing for a part of the mountain to be super steep, but if you don't have skiable terrain there, well it doesn't play into the arguement. It's too bad Stowe isn't up yet. It might be on her somewhere, but I suspect Rob will be right and that Killington would be the pick for VT - not for steepest terrain, but for quantity of steep terrain.

I would love to see one of these with Bretton Woods on it right next to Okemo!

Wildcat isn't that steep, Cannon hands down overall steepest in NH. Mad River Glen is steepest overall for VT. Sugarloaf sounds right for ME. Never been to Jiminy, how does the Beast stack up?

Overall longest steepest trails of mountains that I have skied in the East.
Never skier in NH. Tried one day was spending a week in Stowe with a buddy making the rounds. Went over to wild cat. Was stoked got out of the car flipped open the hatch and bammo forgot my ski bag. 1/2 Stowe

For PA, I have never skied Denton, but....the lower area of Sno Mtn is very steep, and White Lightening is a legit double black mogul trail. (Maybe not as hard as say..Ovation, but..very steep and difficult for PA).

Cannon is definately the steepest in NH. Wildcat is really pretty tame in reality.

I don't ride Wildcat for steepness... Never been to Cannon but I hear it's pretty steep...

The Beast and UMass trails at Berkshire East are steeper than anything at Jiminy but Jiminy has at least 8 runs with some serious pitch, so overall I would rank them steeper...

Good call on Cannon, don't know how I spaced that one...

Mad River - good pick...I dunno about steepest but def. high gnar factor.

Jackson Hole or Grand Targhee I would guess, but GT is small in relation other areas. Aspen Highlands has some steeps, but percentage of the resort that excels in steepness goes to JH. Checkout that link I post on page one. Amazing!

Out west nothing compares to Silverton. It's all steep. Grand Targhee...now that's just silly....JH has some legendary steeps but a fair amount of blues as well. That's inbounds.

If you include off piste then I think JH can measure up to anything out west. I recently found this 20 yr photo at the bottom of a box of pics I have been meaning to check out but never seemed to get around to. It was taken by my friend and former co-worker Bob Woodall. It's back when off piste was only permitted in the spring. It's a popular off-piste run.

Sno mtn does have a great bump run White Lightening is steep(for PA)!

I also think that if you never skied tucks you never experienced east coast steep:flag:

As far as out west goes, Whistler has alot of steep stuff, but Jackson Hole is ALL STEEP. Jackson rocked me, Can't wait for the new tram:snow:

Wildcat consistently gets a gnar hit, and I think a lot of that is because of weather, cold and wind. Of course, trail layout at Wildcat is a little different, we don't cater to ski-in/ski-out lodging, never have and never will. Hike from your car to get your ticket. Hike from there to ski. Might be a blast from the past for some, or too much trouble for the condo crowd, but thats the way of Wildcat.

I am open to argument that Bush or Smuggs is overall seeper than MRG. MRG is not just gnar though, the trails got some pitch! Liftline, Chute, Fall Line, Paradise, Gazelle, Panther, Partridge, etc. The Upper Mountain is the real deal and it doesn't get much steeper inbounds than Paradise. Jay does not have hardly any steeps except Face/Tuckerman Chutes, very short steep part of Green Beret and the short top section of Upper River Quai. Add in the upper sections of Can Am and the woods surrounding it for good measure, not high volume of terrain... trail count isn't a factor. Stowe's front four are very unimpressive, especially Liftline and National which are decided not steep except the very first pitch of National. Goat and Starr have their steeps, but as a whole do not stand up to Mad River. Smuggs, I have not skied so I will need to defer to another opinion. Bush may get the nod due to share volume of terrain in having two full peaks. F.I.S. for north and Castlerock's Liftline for south. I can't remeber heaven's gate enough to vouch for those trails. So discuss those but Stowe and Jay are not open for consideration.

Just because there aren't trails-on-the-map on a section of the mountain doesn't imply that there is no skiable terrain on that section of the mountain. I've been shown around some of the not-on-the-map trails at Stowe... Trust me, the stuff on the map is tame compared to what's in the woods.

I haven't skied Sugarbush much, so I'm not sure how it compares to Stowe. Stowe seems to have a much more consistent "in your face" pitch to it then Killington does though.

Nobody has mentioned Mad River Glen for the title of King of Vermont steeps yet? I've actually never skied there, but if the legend is even remotely true, then it's got to have everything else beat, hands down.

I certainly don't disagree with your statement, but I was purely going for inbounds for two reasons. One, I don't want to share the parts of the mountains that contain these places with people who shouldn't be there and second, because by opening up the whole out-of-bounds arguement, you then have a ton of areas that have adjacent or backsides that are truly steeper than inbounds terrain and then this would do on forever.

Another fun topic would be areas with the steepest going right down to the base. I have one in mind and my legs skill burn from it. And I didn't ski it 25 times, either.

I think it is best to keep this discussion on the map. You start talking about what's off the map and you open up a lot of different options.... many that should not be discussed in open discourse if you know what I mean. MRG would still top that list though ;)
