Steve Fossett

Searchers in California have found the wreckage of missing millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett’s airplane.
Madera County Sheriff John Anderson told the Associated Press that an aerial search first spotted the wreckage late Wednesday in the Inyo National Forest near the town of Mammoth Lakes. Ground teams later confirmed it was Fossett’s single-engine Bellanca aircraft. The aerial search followed a hiker’s discovery of three identification cards and cash that apparently belonged to Fossett.
Fossett made his fortune in finance and then proceeded to notch a series of firsts as an adventurer. The AP writes:
He set marks for speed or distance in balloons, airplanes, gliders, sailboats — even cross-country skis and an airship, according to his Web site. In March 2005, he became the first person to fly a plane solo around the world without refueling.
He disappeared Sept. 3, 2007 after taking off from hotel mogul Baron Hilton’s Nevada Ranch and was declared legally dead in February.
