Trip Report:
Fantastic day at Stratton today. Skied from about 10:30 to 3:30 with wire-to-wire corn. Still great cover, even in much of the woods. No crowds. Impressed how well the snow is holding up, even with the dry March. I guess the early season snow depth and recent cold temps have preserved the base.
Alternated exlusively between two bump runs, Bear Down and a combination of Upper Standard (far left) to Shred Wood Forest to Lower Spruce. Bear Down had some genuinely challenging bumps in the middle section. Standard/Spruce had perfectly spaced hero bumps the whole length. I did try one run down World Cup, but the southern exposure is taking its toll on the snow there. Standard to Lower Spruce was a better bet on that side of the mountain.
I was disappointed that Upper Spruce, Upper Liftline, and Upper Spruce were all groomed. I haven't seen them bumped up all season. Not sure if it's bad timing, or if Stratton doesn't let them bump up anymore. It's kind of a shame, as they are very similar trails, and it seems superfluous to groom all of them. At first I thought there was no top-to-bottom bump route, but discovered that I could ski the bumps on the far left of Upper Standard up to Upper Switchback, cut hard left at the top of Upper Switchback into the Shred Wood trees, and follow Shred Wood to Lower Spruce.
The Shooting Star lift wasn't running, so when skiing Bear Down I had to ski the run out past Shooting Star down to Ursa. There was so much vertical today, I didn't mind the rest.
Great day.
