I skied three days this weekend at Sugarbush with each day bringing different weather and conditions.
Friday – woke up to a grey sky and light rain and knew there was no reason to rush to the mountain. We got on our first chair at around 11 AM as the precipitation was changing over to snow. The guns were blowing while snow and the temperature were dropping. Snow was soft and wet and firmed up with the dropping temperature. There were very few people out and we had a good first day of the season.
Saturday – welcome to winter! Base temps were in the 20’s and teens up top. Snowed hard with strong wind for several hours which resulted in 2-3” of new snow. LOTS more people out on the mountain in variable conditions.
Sunday – day three of the weekend and fairly good early season conditions with the mix of natural and manmade snow. Had to be on the lookout for random icy patches . Did multiple laps and called it a day around noon and got a chance to say hello to thetrailboss at the base lodge.
Overall not a bad start to get the legs back in action for the season. The Jester/Downspout route covers over 1400’ of vertical and does offer some fun turns along the way. Saturday was the only day that it felt crowded. I’m hoping that more terrain opens up for next weekend. The new snow has everything covered but it will take a lot more snow to before the natural snow trails open.
