Beautiful weather throughout NewEngland....sun, clear skies, and NO BUGS!
We drove up, hiked into, and paddled/drifted down the headwaters of the Penobscot River's North Branch on Sunday. Northern Somerset county, WNW Maine.
Just a few pics from BigBog's campsite....Land of Big Sun...Big Fun.....stopped to do a little fishing(4 brooktrout: 14", 11", 8", 6")..kept the 8-incher for lunch. *My first trout of the season JimG!!
One of the Penobscot River's headwaters...3/4 way up the NorthBranch

...I think it's about time to upgrade from my PS A250... , "auto" totally eliminated yesterday's bluebird skies...and turned brown dirt into grey-ish cement..

Nice! I've caught a bunch in the stream on my property, but I spent the better part of spring/early summer learning a new reservoir looking for big lake trout. By the time I learned the fishing hot spots the water got too warm. Never did land a laker, but did catch a few decent sized brown trout.

Last weekend I went back to a favorite warmwater species reservoir. Caught a few largemouth bass, quite a few nice (16" and bigger) smallmouth bass, and a few nice walleye too. All in 4 hours of fishing late afternoon/early evening.

I'll be heading back that way this coming weekend.

JimG....
Rubbing this in our noses again!! Have a friend that inherited ~1/2 huge hill(all forest...etc) on outskirts of small town in N.Central ME...."Guilford"..between Dover & Greenville. Built pond connecting brook & springs...etc, but kept the mud bottom & put in mostly brook & rainbows..<smash> ...had never paid attention to hatches, nor caught any browns(obviously!), so now he has all that...and just ~12-14" fish at the most. Lots of grasshoppers around, maybe a Hexagenia here & there, but nothing like what he would have (for hatches) if he would have invested in good gravel/rocks...etc.

Yeah, mud is a pain to wade in also...best to have a wading staff for those inevitable moments when one leg sinks up to the knee. 12"-14" is decent for a pond like that and very similar to what you'd pull out of my stream. The biggest trout I've caught out of there was 16".

Fortunately for me, the stream bed is mostly rock, gravel and sand and the state stocks the stream from a bridge right up the road. They put in about 7000 browns about 8" in length this spring alone.

Dammit, now I feel like throwing a few casts!
