Resort or Ski Area: Sunday River - Newry, ME

Conditions:packed (Man made) Powder / Machine Groomed / Fresh Blown snow

Trip Report: Had a great weekend up at The River with friends. We got out at about 9:00 on Saturday, and would have been better off walking from Brookside. Parking was WAY down the hill from the lodge, dropped the stuff and friends off at Barker and then parked and walked up wearing my gloves, liner, helmet, 'clava and goggles as it was COLD and WINDY. We booted up in the lodge and headed out.

Waited <5 mins to get on the Barker quad, which was running at what appeared to be half speed due to the winds up high.
First run was Ecstasy to Sunday Punch, snow was very carvable and consistent, felt great. Conditions were like that all over everything that was open. Run of the day was T2 to Cascades.

Hit it hard for a while, then took a chili break.

MEMO TO ALL SR SKIERS: The chili at the crepe hut by the Barker quad is REALLY good. Go see Jake and get some chili and a crepe. Good stuff.

After the chili we made a few more runs, but called quits after I took a harsh fall on lower punch, I don't know what happened, but I was skiing fast, probably faster than I should have been, and then all of a sudden I was down and sliding a good distance. I was attempting to keep pace with one of my friends who I have never skied with before, he's quite good, and that proved to have been a bad decision on my part... Looking uphill after I fell there were a bunch of small rocks that had worked there way up to the surface, I might have clipped one of them... As I was standing up, I noticed my right thumb was THROBBING (good thing I'm left handed). We then took a run down right stuff and that had us really huffing and puffing.... What started as 'let's check out what Wayne did to his thumb in the lodge' ended up being 'we're all pretty beat, let's hit the hot tub'. By the looks of the bruising and it's behavior over the past two days, I think I hyper-extended it at both the base and the knuckle. It's swollen and pretty purple. Jumping right in the hot tub was probably a bad decision. I should have iced it first.

Lazy River, Lower Risky Business and Tourist Trap were supposed to open, but they were not open by the time we called it a day.

My girlfriend and I took the long hike back to the van, leaving our skis, boots and poles by the rack by Barker. Reading Molecan's thread, I'm really glad that hers didn't get lifted (not so worried about my beaters)... I actually had a passing thought that I didn't like leaving them there and Emily joked when we got back up with the van to the effect of 'yay, my skis are still there'. They were only unattended for a few minutes as our other friends were right behind us with their stuff and waited at the rack for us... but it still makes me uneasy knowing that some were lifted from that same spot a couple hours later.

Sunday was much less windy and felt warmer. All the lifts were turning at full speed, lines of less than 5 minutes all day. Monday Morning was amazing under the guns with the whales and bumps forming. It kicked my ass and I fell twice, but it was a blast. Lower Risky and the steep part of Tourist Trap were similar, only no guns on... We banged out early to catch the Pats game, and that was before the Spruce lift was running, but rumors are that it turned later in the day. The best groomed snow on the hill that we found on Sunday was Right Stuff. We took a high speed bomb on that at about noon, and aside for some flat light in the middle third, it was a perfect groomed trail, that was a fun run.

More chili on Sunday and then back to the condo for the Pats game.

Had a ton of fun, looking forward to next weekend.

On another note, we have turned my buddy's studio condo in Brookside into a monster... It can now sleep 8 comfortably. Crazy.

No pictures as the camera never left the duffle bag by accident (I thought I forgot to pack it and then found it Sunday night as we were packing up to leave).

Sat they opened Lazy River around 1pm I would guess. with huge mounds of snow and waterbars. Lower risky had nice bumps that developed from the man dry made. Monday M opened even later on Sat I heard. My 3 runs on that on Sunday were the runs of the year. Sorry to hear about the injury. I love all the condo adjustmetns folks make, amazing what one can do with small areas.
