Area skied: Sunday River

Date skied: December 16th, 2006 from 8:00am - 12:30pm.

Surface conditions: machine groomed, loose granular, spring conditions.

The temperature rose overnight to 35F at 7:00am and a light drizzle was falling when we drove up to the South Ridge base lodge.

Warren and I started out the day with a run down Lower Lazy River which was groomed granular snow back down to the South Ridge Triple and on to the Spruce Peak Triple and we skied the newly opened trail combo of Sirus, Aludra, Lights Out and Downdraft. Sirus if more poling than anything else, but the rest of the trail combo had large snowmaking whales that where fun to ski and very large.

We skied Lazy River twice and it was in good shape with soft spring snow. Upper Sunday Punch was scraped off and Lower Sunday Punch was okay with small bumps developing, but was a bit too steep for Warren and he fell twice on the way down.

I skied the newly opened American Express and it had alot of snowmaking whales and moguls as well as thin areas in the middle of the trail which was getting alot of skier traffic and being skied off. The trail is only partly opened as the portion below the Three Mile Trail X-cut was closed but had a snowmaking base on it and could open with a little more snowmaking.

Overall the base on all trails is thinner than last weekend and is VERY thin on Lower Broadway where it is down to grass in one spot just above the South Ridge lodge. I have not yet skied Monday Mourning but the lower part has brown snow and looks seriously thin.

Tonight is forecast to be below freezing and I think that snow will be made as some key areas of the mountain badly need more snow.

Thanks for the report loafer, I am considering going up tomorrow, but if it drops below freezing tonight and they can't make much snow it could be pretty sketchy out there. I can imagine south ridge and lower MM must be real thin because even last weekend there was some grass sticking through. Pretty amazing that they were able to open up that much new terrain given the lousy temps! SR snowmakers are the greatest:beer:

I took three more runs from 2:30 - 3:30pm and the snow was starting to freeze up on the upper elevations, but the skiing was still good. By 3:00pm I had most of the trails/lifts to myself as most people had left for the day

I skied Lower Monday Mourning and did hit a few rocks, but the cover in general is adequate.

We drove over to the Jordan Grand and I meet up with a snowmaker setting up guns and hoses on Firestar and he said that they are going to try to make snow tonight, but it might be elevation dependent.

I would say the skiing should be okay for sunday.

We just finished eating dinner at the Grand Summit and we drove up to the North Peak condo's and I can hear the snowguns fireing on the upper elevations of North Peak/Spruce Peak.

Snowmaking is going full bore somewhere on the upper mountain as the compressors by the Barker Lodge are on and very loud.

The on and off rain/snow showers that fell all day have left and it is now clear, calm and
28F outside. The groomers are out on the mountain right now.

I get the feeling that tonights snowmaking is for terrain expansion only.

I am wearing a U.S ski team suit that is red, white and blue and will have my son in tow.

We are staying at Brookside, so we can be at Barker by 8:00am no problem.

I always go upstairs to the bar and put on my stuff up there. Less people and confusion. Also when done skiing, you are already there for a beer!!!
