Area skied: Sunday River
Date skied: December 16th, 2006 from 8:00am - 12:30pm.
Surface conditions: machine groomed, loose granular, spring conditions.
The temperature rose overnight to 35F at 7:00am and a light drizzle was falling when we drove up to the South Ridge base lodge.
Warren and I started out the day with a run down Lower Lazy River which was groomed granular snow back down to the South Ridge Triple and on to the Spruce Peak Triple and we skied the newly opened trail combo of Sirus, Aludra, Lights Out and Downdraft. Sirus if more poling than anything else, but the rest of the trail combo had large snowmaking whales that where fun to ski and very large.
We skied Lazy River twice and it was in good shape with soft spring snow. Upper Sunday Punch was scraped off and Lower Sunday Punch was okay with small bumps developing, but was a bit too steep for Warren and he fell twice on the way down.
I skied the newly opened American Express and it had alot of snowmaking whales and moguls as well as thin areas in the middle of the trail which was getting alot of skier traffic and being skied off. The trail is only partly opened as the portion below the Three Mile Trail X-cut was closed but had a snowmaking base on it and could open with a little more snowmaking.
Overall the base on all trails is thinner than last weekend and is VERY thin on Lower Broadway where it is down to grass in one spot just above the South Ridge lodge. I have not yet skied Monday Mourning but the lower part has brown snow and looks seriously thin.
Tonight is forecast to be below freezing and I think that snow will be made as some key areas of the mountain badly need more snow.
