Area skied: Sunday River, Maine.
Date skied: February 17th from 9:00am - 2:00pm
Surface conditions: Machine groomed, hardpacked, packed powder.
Weather: sunshine and 6F at 9:00am, cloudy at 2:00pm and 27F.
We had a pleasant day at Sunday River today and started the day at Jordan Bowl after I redeemed some Boyne Rewards points to get a ticket on one of my blackout dates with my silver pass.
We scored a parking spot right near the stairs to the Grand Jordan and took our first run down a curduroy Lollapalooza, followed by much the same on Excalibur. Rogue Angel was a bit icy near the top as is usually the case, but had great groomed snow with some of the snowmaking whales still in place making for fun play in the crests and dips of the run.
Rogue angel:
We took the Jordan Mountain Double to the Aurora Peak Quad and skied down a silky smooth Northern Lights. Airglow was next and was great until just above the intersection with Black Hole when the surface changed from packed powder to skiing on crushed ice cubes.
Next up was a ride up the Quantum Leap Triple to Dreamaker which had good snow but tons of people on it. We skied down to the South Ridge Area to a long line for both the South Ridge Express and the South Ridge Triple, but we took the triple anyway.
We made our way to the Sunday River Express which had a 10-15 minute wait because we wanted to ski Last Tango which was fairly decent with good cover and this is the first time that we skied the full length of the trail which gets very narrow and a bit steep near the end by Lower Sunday Punch.
We skied to Spruce Peak and skied down an icy and hardpacked Downdraft and had a light lunch at the North Peal Lodge, Afterward we skied down Quantum Leap which was scraped down to barely edgable hardpacked snow with some powder down either side of the trail.
I wanted to ski Celestial with Warren and after riding the Aurora Peak Quad we skied this trail which was kind of icy and had a loose granular surface and not very fun. We rode the chair back up and decided to try Flying Monkey for the first time and Warren actually liked this double black diamond glade, so much so that we skied it three times:blink:
Celestial:
Slightly deep snow at the summit of OZ:
It's kind of fun to be chasing an 8 year old down a double black diamond glade:lol:
Warren and I ended the day with a run down lollapalooza into Blind Ambition which had great packed powder snow.
