Resort or Ski Area: Sunday River
Conditions: Temps 30-40; SNOW; soft snow and hardpack at North Peak and South Ridge, hard and icy at Aurora; cloudy but the sun peeked out in the afternoon
Trip Report:
What a difference a day makes! Saturday was all about skiing in a t-shirt in the sixties and skiing corn snow and slush(and practicing for pond skimming in the liftline). Sunday was colder and snowing. It snowed from the time I got up at 7 until around 1 pm. It was coming down at a pretty fast clip too at mid-morning. Welcome to spring in New England! The combo of melted snow, a cold night and no sun was sure to make for some slick surfaces so I decided to hang back at breakfast.
I was introducing the River to a few friends whose skiing skills are best described as "beginner but progressing" so we stayed mostly in the North Peak-South Ridge area. We started at around 10 am and the trails were all nicely groomed. The bottom of South Ridge is showing bare spots but, other than that, coverage was pretty good. The groomers did a good job of cutting up the hard snow and the North Peak trails (Escapade, Grand Rapids and Dreammaker) were skiing pretty well. As the day progressed, slick spots developed but that was to be expected.
I peeled off from the group at around noon and headed to Aurora. Paradigm was pretty iced up and so was Airglow. I did a few ice runs and worked on my ice technique. It could come in handy someday. Run home was down an icy Vortex. The right side was all solid bumps so I cut over to the left where it was groomed. Called it a day early but I hear that, as the sun came out in the afternoon and with the new snow, the skiing was great.
It wasn't a day for the books but the combo of a hard freeze and some snow should help to extend the season a little bit further. Besides, we had to pay for all that goodness on Saturday in some way!
