In my mind, northern New England
Date(s) Skied: March 10, 2007

Resort or Ski Area: Sunday River

Conditions: PP, hardpack; sunny; chilly but warmed nicely at noontime

Trip Report:

We skied the western side of the resort this day. We usually park in the White Cap lodge so this time we took the longer route to Jordan Bowl. There really was no lodge there -- just the posh Jordan Grand Hotel. Got there at around 1030 and booted up in the car. The plan was to explore Jordan Bowl then move east to Oz and Aurora since we had never skied these parts.

First run on Jordan Bowl was on Excalibur and Rogue Angel. Same conditions on both runs -- groomed, packed powder. Both were wide blue cruisers but somehow they skied differently from the blues on the other side of the resort. They seemed steeper.

Li'l snowmonster and I went down Lollapalooza to get to the trees in Blind Ambition. Had a great time in there. It was her first time in the trees and I'm a tree-skiing newbie myself. The trees were widely spaced apart so I guess for real tree-skiers this was nothing. But it was a great training run and confidence builder. It was bumped up and the snow was soft. We hit Blind Ambition over and over.

It was sunny at noon time and I was overheating so I took off my jacket and sunbathed off the Jordan Bowl chair. Ahhh, spring!

Going up the Jordan Bowl chair, I looked into the woods in Wizard's Gulch. Looks like there's lots of untracked and deep powder in there. Maybe next time (or next year) when I have the necessary skills to skim the pow and not wrap myself around a tree.

After the short break, we hit Kansas to sample Oz. The Oz chair had been going slow throughout the day and by the time we crossed over to that mountain, it was shut down, I promised myself I would take it easy so I passed up Tin Woodsman and went down Eureka instead. It was bumped up with nice soft snow. The middle part though was getting skied off and some parts were pure ice. Good natural snow run though.

Got back to Jordan Bowl and took Kansas again to Aurora Peak. It was about 2:30 at this time and there was hardly anybody at Aurora. It was practically deserted. Northern Lights was hardpacked and skied off in some parts but for the most part it was very carve-able. Airglow was a great run. Same conditions as Northern Lights except it was bumped up in some parts. Went down here twice and wanted more but it was already getting late and I wanted to hit Blind Ambition before calling it a day.

Great day at Sunday River. There's still a lot to explore in Jordan-Oz-Aurora and I'm definitely making this my home base for my next trip up.

OFF-TOPIC: I recommend the barbecue at Bob's right in front of the Irving gas station on Route 26 (beside the Good Food store). Whoever said that there was no good eatin' at the River?

SR is my new favorite place. I just spent a week there and as we were packing up, my wife said " I wouldn't mind owning a place near here" :spread:
