I went to Tahoe for the first time last winter, March 25-29. Stayed in South Lake at Harvey's and had a really nice room for $35/nt. The casinos offer some great rates to get you in the door. Skied for four days and did Kirkwood, Heavenly, Kirkwood, then Sierra. Planned on doing Heavenly twice but Kirkwood was so awesome it warranted a second visit. Look on eBay for 2 for 1's, I picked up some that were good for Heavenly AND Kirkwood for like $15-20 or so (it was from a Warren Miller movie).

Kirkwood was definitely my favorite, the place is just awesome, snow was great and the terrain was challenging. Definitely hit the Wave and the trees to skiers right as someone else said above, that's a great run. I was there on a Monday and Wednesday and pretty much had the place to myself, I doubt it even gets too busy on the weekends. For that same reason though there weren't a whole lot of bumps there. Only downside is all of the slow fixed grip lifts. There's a nice bar/restaurant on premises when you're coming down the mountain skiers past by "The Wall" chair. $4 craft beers and $9 sandwiches for lunch. Great deal (place is not owned by Vail resorts).

Got a little skunked at Heavenly as it had been warm the week before and it was cold the day I went so the conditions weren't great everywhere. The Nevada side got some sun and softened up a bit and I was able to hit some trees there which were awesome. Gunbarrel was closed all day since it was firm so I never got to ski that. My overall impression of Heavenly was that there are a lot of cruisers with some great tree skiing in between, but it didn't have the challenge that Kirkwood did (although I didn't get to go into Mott and Killebrew Canyons as they were closed). The views were really nice even though it was cloudy most of the day. Bring your wallet if you go to Heavenly though as a beer is like $10 and a sandwich is like $15 for lunch. Crazy.

Sierra was really nice although smaller then the other mountains. The weather was perfect the day I hit it, like 45-50 and sunny in the afternoon and there were lots of bumps that were soft for the ripping. There were good tree lines as well.

I highly recommend checking out South Lake and Kirkwood. It was a really cheap trip and a ton of fun. Only downside of going there from the east coast is you're going to lose a day for travelling in each direction. There aren't any east coast airports that fly direct to Reno so I ended up flying from Albany and connecting through Vegas. Makes for a long day of travel.
