I had a big fight with tequila about 15 years ago. It took a really long time and a trip to Mexico to get back on speaking terms. We still have some bad feelings towards each other, but if I respect tequila, tequila will respect me. Some.

I'm so uneducated about tequila..I thought Cuervo was pretty good tequila since people usually buy shots of Cuervo as opposed to the bottle shelf tequila. I've never tried Patron due to the expense..either $50 a bottle or $6-7 a shot. Currently my mixed drink of choice is Gray Goose and Pinapple juice..

I've seen Patron anywhere from $45-$65 a bottle depending on the store, worth trying at least once. Corazon de Agave Blanco is a nice alternative, nice and smooth and less expensive. This is one brand where I actually prefer the blanco to the anejo.

Other likkers. Go light on the Cuervo in a Long Island though or you spoil the whole thing!

I agree, Steve. Back in the day the college bar of choice, used to just leave the tequilla out of the LI iced teas altogether. Man, those were good. $5 for a pint glass....of which about 85-90% was booze. You'd get a good buzz on one. Feeling mighty fine after 2. Drunk by the 3rd. And, "were we out last night?" after 4. The only time I tried 5 I got sick.

When I lived in the Boston area, I had a short list of bars that could serve a good and cheap long island in a pint glass AND that used all the likkers instead of the mix. Matter of fact, I always ask when ordering a Long Island for the first time if they actually make one or use the dreaded mix. Any ways, good times, pint glass full of booze with a small squirt of cola, that always made my night for $6-7.

During my short stint tending bar I always enjoyed making LI's. One of the few drinks I was confident enough with to double fist the bottles when pouring.

True mark of a good bar tender (IMO) is double bottles in both hands for a long island. Four bottles going at once. Really a beautiful thing to watch. This is taking me back to my years in the Boston club scene circa 2001 there was this wicked cute bar tender at Karma that made one of the best LI's I have ever had. Great pour, a pleasure to watch. The pour I mean. 8)

Oh yeah, gotta make them with the booze up to about 1" from the top of the pint glass.....a bit of sour and a splash of coke. That's all they need.
