Anyone picked up this book yet?

Sounds quite interesting.

I was pleasantly surprised to read about it first on Lou Dawson's Wild Snow blog. I think I might order it. I'm quite curious.

I don't, but I'll bet Freeheelwilly does. That's God's country brah, if you've never been get up there. I'm hikin up there tomorrow.

I vacationed once with the fam in Lake Placid. Toured the lake and viewed it from Whiteface. Also drove through a few times on the way up to the St. Lawrence. Judging from what this book has to offer, I think I'd very much like to return for skiing.

If only just to ski *The Rumor* at Gore ;)

There is, without a doubt, some great BC in the 'Dacks. For me, it's too much of a haul to get up there much at all.

Let me give a synopsis of my ADK experience:

Summited Mt. Marcy (and a couple of other High Peaks) in 2/1978.

Returned in 8/78 for a delightfull visit with a friend of the female persuation. Also admired the ski jumps under construction for the 1980 Olympics.

Made it back to ski Whiteface in 3/2005. When I checked into the motel, I commented to the clerk (obviously a long time local) about the last time I had seen the ski jumps. I chuckled and said: "Welcome back!"

I love the 'Dacks, however, they are somewhat off my radar, due to the travel time. What a shame. Still more of the Pressi's that i haven;t explored. I'll stay closer to home.

unfortunately, the dacks are off my radar too. three hours to that side of the lake plus additional drive time to where you're going. i can deal with 3-4 hour drives still, but add to that fact that i don't have regular BC partners heading in that direction makes things more challenging. the cool part about that "guide" is that it doesn't sound like it is very detailed. it looks more like a "hey, check this out, but find your own way there."

Im a big fan of the fact that he doesnt tell you every single little detail about how to get there. I went on a few guided trips through the outdoor club at SLU and there are some incredible runs to be had. That being said, its not like Tux and can support thousand of people using them.

Here's a great pix of some of ADK high peaks with slides. The mountain in front is Colden. The skier is the second pix is skiing Colden.

Second pic is the other side of Colden though and not the same side as the 1st pic. That low mountain in the foreground appears to be Tabletop with the Great Range behind it. That's an awesome shot! (but where's his shovel?) I've skied that slide but not from the top.

I have not purchased that book yet but it's on the list. Thing about slides in the Dacks, unlike Tux, which is a shorthike on a well marked trail, the approaches to many of these shots are long and, in many cases, you'll probably be breakin' trail. I'd also want to go with at least one person who could assess avy danger. When the Wright Peak slide ripped out a few years ago people died. I happened to be stayin' with a DEC caretaker at the Interior Outpost cabin on Lake Colden and saw the doomed party ascending the slide on my way in. Very sad day.
