Date(s) Hiked: August 28 2010
Trails(s) Hiked: Various
Total Distance: Seven miles
Difficulty: Easy
Conditions: Dry trails, no bugs to speak of
Special Required Equipment:
Use caution after October 1st, hunting is allowed, except on Sundays.
Trip Report:
Best trail map is here http://www.nemba.org/images/maps/twnsndsf.gif even though it's bike-oriented map, it works for the trekker too.
Selective DCR-sanctioned logging ops in northeast quadrant (east of Fessenden Hill Road). Low spots on this east-west road have been filled recently with 5" gravel, which has not yet settled. Challenging for both hiking and biking.
Majority of trails are NOT marked or blazed - bring topo map and compass/gps. Good forest for "exploring" and getting comfortable with your map-reading skills. Some trail offshoots deadend. I tracked the entire perimeter of the forest, roughly 7 miles. There are a couple of trails that have blazes, but it's unclear where the start/endpoints are. Trail in NE quadrant across NH line is probably not extant - there are two housing developments in this territory now. Use the south-of-the-border east-west trail. Excellent for hiking and MTB. 2-track roads are Class 5.
Ample Off-street Parking on Dudley Rd. Noted http://www.nek9sar.org/ trucks onsite.
Enjoyable day, met only two other people, both with killer terriers. Man, those dogs have a mean streak!
