Went with my parents and kiddos to see a landmark yesterday. None of us had ever been before so that was cool. We ate hot dogs at the REAL Nathan's (which has a digital countdown on the side to the next hot dog eating contest ). Visited the NY Aquarium because our Bronx Zoo memberships get us in there as well. It was crazy there. Name Your Price day and the line was LONG. Luckily, we were able to jump to the front of it but that crowd continued inside. It was okay. Nice that they have some larger animals like walruses, fur seals, sea lions, sea otters, and penguins, too. But the enclosures make it difficult to view them and nearly impossible to photograph. The exhibit under the large animals was decent--especially the underwater views of them. But the shark exhibit was pretty sad, and I wasn't all that impressed with the rest of the aquarium. I'd pick the Norwalk Maritime Aquarium over it next time. Still, I'm glad we went.

We walked on the boardwalk after that in the Coney Island direction. Yes, the rides are still there and most are still operational, despite rumors that they were not. We did not go on any: kids' rides were $3 per ride! We walked out on the pier and enjoyed the ocean breeze. Checked out the train schedule to see if we could take the train down from the Bronx next time. Then headed home hoping to avoid traffic. My dad missed his exit and we ended up on Long Island for a bit. Went through Elmont, Belmont Springs (by the racetrack), stopped at a small bakery we found by accident in Floral Park called Buttercooky, and slowly but surely, my dad found is way back to 295 and then to where we wanted to be. Long ride home. Still, saw some things I haven't seen before. Next time I'd like an earlier start--we didn't leave Torrington until 11AM since my mom worked in the morning. I would have preferred arriving by then, at the latest. Hoping to see the Brighton Beach area next and check out the culture on the streets around there.

Some pics...they're not great. VERY sunny day yesterday which is a nightmare for photography. Harsh lighting... but I did my best.

This one was taken from the moving car so not in focus, unfortunately...

This guy was an 80-lb sea otter. Looked like a beaver to me.

There are a lot of metered parking spots (for up to 2 hours of parking) but my dad happened upon a private "lot" with a guy sitting at the entrance. $15 to park the entire day up until midnight. Not bad. It was a block or 2 past Nathan's on the same side of the road (opposite direction of the aquarium). The aquarium parking was $25 and I imagine that was only up until they closed at 6PM. The train station is right across the street from Nathan's and boardwalk access so if you don't have to drive and don't mind the train, I'd recommend it. We got stuck in a lot of weekend beach traffic once we got down to the Belt Pkwy.

Thanks, Warp. :D I had hoped to get a lot of better pics that day but the lighting just wasn't in my favor.

IIRC, the parachute ride was originally built to train paratroopers in WWII, and then moved to Coney Island as an amusement after the war.

Did I read somewhere that Coney Island might be torn down?

There are rumors flying all over... some say it was already closed (which clearly it isn't). There are parts that are run down and no longer operational. I imagine that's what they're talking about dismantling and developing (I have a pic of one of these things in my flickr album... it's between the boardwalk stuff and where the Cyclones play minor league baseball).

Astroland doesn't appear to be what they're tearing down...

I love the tagline for the Coney Island tourism site: "Really fun. Really open."
