I was going to head up to Attitash for a few days, but I'm not too familiar with the area. Does anyone have ideas or suggestions for good places to stay? Are motels the best bet, or is renting a place a common thing to do?

Thanks for any advice.

I would look into the Grand Summit, which is trailside at Bear Peak. I have never stayed there, but I have heard good things from people who have stayed there.

Depending on your budget and time of visit, the Grand Summit is a great way to go at Attitash. Over the holidays it's around 189 per person per night but before and after it's way less including tickets. There are alot of local inns and motels for the budgeted...but getting the tickets included via the Grand can offset any savings at a local inn.

If you are driving and will have a car, you don't have to spend a lot of money on a slopeside condo at Attitash. First of all, even in the remote possibility of a heavy dump in the morning, you might be able to get through from North Conway to the ski area in time to make the first chairs. The roads from town to the resort are relatively flat and well-maintained. Second, North Conway offers very affordable rates, especially non-holiday and midweek (try around $40 to $60 per room). If you know the quick back route from Conway, you could look there as well. This road saves a trip down the slow main drag, but it can be somewhat tricky depending on the precipt. On top of that any drive through the Mt. Washington Valley offers terrific views. Nevertheless, if you want a good slope-side condo, The Grand Summit will do nicely. I have been in every kind of unit they offer. The big one's are a dream come true for families. The small one's are a ski bum's idea of heaven. The lodge has it's own restaurant, a lobby, a game room and other amenities. Every unit seems to have a balcony facing the slopes. It's fairly new and has an quarter-share ownership so it will still be in good shape.

I wouldn't recommend the Grand Summit. It is REALLY pricey for a three star property. It looks/feels very tired. You are paying out west prices - for a really mediocre property

There are plenty of great inns in N Conway. Check out the New England Inn and the Lodge there. It is AWESOME - and is close to the mountain. Best of all - Tuckmans Tavern is RIGHT THERE.

Heading up to Attitash tomorrow.....Looking forward to ILLUSION!

See you on the slops

Funny, I got that impression. I saw the units they were selling, though, last fall and they were looking good. It is a good slope-side situation, too. I wonder about the quarter share arrangement. Even the ownership can exact a heavy maintenance toll. The floors in the commons areas are very creaky and loose.

I'll have my car, so travelling around won't be an issue. Does it matter a lot to some folks to have a ski in/ski out place?

Sorry for the stupid questions. The whole area there is new to me for skiing.

If you have a car, you will be all set. As of today, you can ski out..but not in to the Grand Summit. Wandering Skis, the trail to get to the hotel, hasn't opened yet.

Attitash is easy to get to, and you can pull up front to drop your skis off and then park your car across the street in the lot. You can also drive to Bear Peak (the other mountain at Attitash) about 1 mile down the road - and park there. It is usually less crowded and parking can be much closer to the lodge.

Check out the Red Parka Pub for Apres Ski - free peanuts and popcorn to go with your favority beer!
