Tuckerman Ravine
New snow, but a bit scratchy at the top of Right Gulley
I was keeping a close eye on the weather and avalanche reports for Mt Washington before heading up for a couple reasons. Each of my half dozen past experiences in the ravine were of the warm weather corn snow spring skiing type. Now it looked like full on winter was back in the mountains. Second, I had broken my thumb in late January, and had not made a single turn on snow before last weekend. We were greeted by 10 inches of new snow at Pinkham Notch, and fortunately the avalanche reports were only Moderate for much of the bowl. The ski patrol was anxious about new snow piling up on the south side as the winds picked up in the afternoon, (Hillman's, Left Gulley, Chute) and crevasses had opened up on the Headwall and Lip, so up Right Gulley we went.
As you'll see in the video, we had some sunshine on the way up, but by the time we clicked in just under the top the wind was blowing and snow was coming down. It was far from corn snow, and there was enough traffic to scrape away the softer snow up top down to a crusty frozen hardpack underneath. Halfway down Right Gulley the snow was much better.
We were able to ski all the way to Pinkham Notch thanks to the new snow. (although being a couch potato for 6 weeks nursing my thumb made my quads scream bloody murder for the bottom half...)
Sorry it's a little late, but I figured better late than never. As I'm writing this, (4-27-2010) today's avalanche report is saying they expect another foot of snow up there tonight. Skiing should be pretty darn good this coming weekend.
Please feel free to comment on the video... thanks
